Jennifer Lawrence Details Nearly Dying in a Plane Crash After Filming Mother!

Jennifer Lawrence recalls her near-death experience on a flight to New York City shortly after filming wrapped on Darren Aronofsky’s Mother!.

Throughout her career, Jennifer Lawrence has played plenty of characters who either die or almost die in their films, but in 2017 the actor experienced a true, near-death experience.

The Hunger Games and X-Men star recounted the experience during an interview with Vanity Fair. Shortly after filming wrapped on Darren Aronofsky’s psychological horror film Mother!, wherein Lawrence starred as the titular, doomed character, she boarded a private plane taking her from her hometown of Louisville, KY to New York City. After a loud noise and a sudden change in the cabin’s air pressure, Lawrence was informed that one of the plane’s two engines had failed. It was still possible to make an emergency landing with one engine, but when all of the noise suddenly stopped, that’s when the terror set in.

“My skeleton was all that was left in the seat. We were all just going to die. I started leaving little mental voicemails to my family, you know, ‘I’ve had a great life, I’m sorry,'” Lawrence said. “I just felt guilty. Everybody was going to be so bummed. And, oh, God, Pippi was on my lap, that was the worst part. Here’s this little thing who didn’t ask to be a part of any of this.”

However, the emergency landing was still possible. Lawrence detailed looking out the plane window as they approached a runway in Buffalo, NY, which was full of fire trucks and emergency vehicles. It’s then that Lawrence started praying. “Not to the specific God I grew up with, because he was terrifying and a very judgmental guy,” she said. “But I thought, Oh, my God, maybe we’ll survive this? I’ll be a burn victim, this will be painful, but maybe we’ll live.” Even when recounting a terrifying experience, Lawrence joked, “Please, Lord Jesus, let me keep my hair. Wrap me in your hair-loving arms. Please don’t let me go bald.'”

While the plane was able to land, it wasn’t a smooth landing by any means, slamming into the runway so hard the plane bounced back up and came down again just as hard. Both the crew and passengers of the private plane were rescued and unharmed, but Lawrence, unfortunately, had to board another plane soon after. “It made me a lot weaker,” Lawrence said. “Flying is horrific and I have to do it all the time.”

Lawrence is currently starring alongside Leonardo DiCaprio in Netflix’s upcoming satirical sci-fi comedy Don’t Look Up, which is set to premiere first in theaters on Dec. 10 and then on Netflix Dec. 24.
