The Suicide Squad director James Gunn explains how a key character sustained a wound in one of the film’s deleted scenes.
A key part of The Suicide Squad revolves around the titular team capturing Gaius Grieves/The Thinker and using him to access a laboratory inside of Jotunheim. However, at some point after the team successfully abducts The Thinker, the villain sustains an unexplained injury to his ear and wears a bandage for the rest of the film. Director James Gunn has now revealed a deleted scene for The Suicide Squad will show just how The Thinker’s ear was injured.
In response to a question on Twitter about how Thinker’s ear got injured, Gunn explained, “You’ll be able to see the deleted scene on the Blu Ray. Thinker tries to manipulate Polka Dot Man into helping him and PDM almost gives in but instead shoots him in the ear.”
The original version of The Thinker, Clifford DeVoe, first appeared in 1943’s All-Flash #12 and was created by Gardner Fox and Everett E. Hibbard. Since then, there have been several versions of the villain, and the one in The Suicide Squad most closely resembles the version of the Thinker that was introduced in 2014’s Suicide Squad #25, by Matt Kindt and Patrick Zircher.
In The Suicide Squad, The Thinker is played by Doctor Who alum Peter Capaldi. The scientist works for the leaders of Corto Maltese and has been experimenting on Starro the Conqueror for decades, using the island’s inhabitants as test subjects. At this time, there’s no indication Capaldi will reprise his role as The Thinker in the future.
A standalone sequel to 2016’s Suicide Squad, The Suicide Squad holds a 91 percent on Rotten Tomatoes, making it the second-highest rated DC Extended Universe movie on the review aggregator. While The Suicide Squad has only grossed $155 million worldwide against a budget of approximately $185 million, the movie released simultaneously in theaters and on HBO Max during the COVID-19 pandemic. Currently a spin-off series starring John Cena as Peacemaker is set to arrive on HBO Max in January 2022.
The Suicide Squad is in theaters and on HBO Max now. Currently, there is no announced release date for when The Suicide Squad will arrive on home media.
