Despite being a CW series, Naomi is pretty explicitly in a Justice League of its own, having seemingly no connection to the Arrowverse or Stargirl.
WARNING: The following contains spoilers for the pilot episode of the CW’s Naomi.
As the newest DC Comics superhero show to hit the CW, many would naturally assume that Naomi is also the newest entry in the network’s expansive Arrowverse. After all, this year marks the 10th anniversary of the television shared universe, which began with the airing of the show Arrow. Despite this lineage, the continuity of Naomi isn’t quite as straight forward.
Despite being a CW series, Naomi is pretty explicitly in a Justice League of its own, having seemingly no connection to the Arrowverse or even Stargirl. This creates a brand new continuity for the CW to explore, though it might seem like a missed opportunity to fans. Here’s how Naomi establishes its own unique universe right from the first episode.
Does Naomi Connect With the Arrowverse or the DCEU?
It’s pretty obvious for anyone who’s watched the series’ pilot that Naomi is not connected to the Arrowverse, or any other established DC universe, for that matter. Naomi and her friends refer to characters like Superman and other superheroes as mere comic book characters, which likely means any other superheroes are entirely fictional, as well. In fact, the Arrowverse itself is fictional to Naomi, who’s characterized as a fangirl for comic books and related media.
“Superman” shows up in the pilot, but this Man of Steel and the battle that he engages in are all apparently just part of an elaborate stunt. It’s also worth noting that he isn’t portrayed by Tyler Hoechlin, Brandon Routh, Henry Cavill or even Tom Welling or Dean Cain, so him being a faux Last Son of Krypton is more likely than the alternative. Of course, the very idea that Dee, a local tattoo artist, is able to afford such extravagant stunts is rather suspect, adding to the show’s sense of mystery concerning its extraordinary events.
How Naomi Could Interact With the Arrowverse
It’s been made clear from the network that Naomi will not be crossing over with the Arrowverse anytime soon, though this could still happen sometime in the future. After all, the premise of the Naomi comic books is that she’s from another dimension, explaining her eventual superpowers. This is likely still the case in this series, and Naomi will soon learn of her true heritage and her innate abilities.
On top of that, Dee is revealed to be a Thanagarian, which along with everything else about the character raises all sorts of questions. He apparently was there on the day that Naomi was adopted, so it’s possible that they both hail from the same universe. On top of that, his Nth metal wings actually naturally come out of his back, making him unlike any version of Hawkman or Hawkgirl from the comic books or even the Arrowverse. Dee also seems to have been involved with the “Superman” stunt — and not just by giving a guy a jetpack.
The likely course the plot will take throughout the show’s potential run is that, in investigating Naomi’s origins, both her and Dee end up in another universe. This could be either the main Earth of the Arrowverse or the one of Stargirl. This would be ultimate moment for Naomi, an unabashed superhero fangirl, to meet actual superheroes like the ones she idolizes. Unfortunately, fans will have to wait a while for this to happen, as Naomi finds her own place in her current universe.
Naomi airs on The CW on Tuesdays at 9 pm ET/PT.
