Is Marvel’s New Doomsday Weapon More Powerful Than the Infinity Gauntlet?

[ad_1]

Reckoning War has just revealed the most powerful weapon in the Marvel Universe has ever seen, and it could be the end of everything.

WARNING: The following contains major spoilers for Fantastic Four: Reckoning War #1, available now from Marvel.

The Marvel Universe has always been home to sprawling cosmic epics, and the Reckoning War is already proving to be the one of the most devastating of them all. Not only has the world been invaded by a classic alien menace, an even greater threat is poised to unleash the most powerful weapon Marvel has ever seen. The Infinity Gauntlet and Cosmic Cube might seem impossibly powerful, but what is coming next could reduce the entire Marvel Universe to dust.

Fantastic Four: Reckoning War #1 by Dan Slott, Carlos Pacheco, Rafael Fonteriz, Carlos Magno, Guru-eFX, and VC’s Joe Caramagna has just released a torrent of threats upon the Marvel Universe the likes of which it has never seen. The Earth has been invaded, the moon has been destroyed, and the Fantastic Four are only able to sift through the wreckage of what is left behind in their search for answers. Thankfully, Reed Richards uncovers the secrets behind these devastating attacks, all of which lie in the long forgotten origins of the Watchers. Before they were known as the Watchers, they were the Luminous, and they openly spread their advanced technology to other races throughout the cosmos. One of these races would come to be known as the Reckoning after forging the Watchers’ gifts into weapons that helped them wage war on every other civilization. In the final moments of their last battle, the Reckoning unleashed their most powerful creation.

This unnamed doomsday device didn’t just turn the tide of battle, it very nearly turning the entire universe to dust before the Watchers sealed it and the Reckoning away. That isn’t to say that it only destroyed living beings, planets, or entire galaxies, but rather that it was capable of reducing all of those things as well as the very void of space itself to ash. The destruction of entire universes isn’t a new concept to Marvel Universe, nor are reality altering items, yet somehow there has still never been anything quite like the mystery weapon employed by the Reckoning.

Quite possibly the most iconic and overpowered weapon in the Marvel Universe is none other than the Infinity Gauntlet. Alone, the Gauntlet is merely a vessel for the Infinity Stones, each of which grant the person wielding them control over some aspect of time, space, or even reality. When combined by Thanos, the Mad Titan was able to erase half of all life in the universe with a snap of his fingers in what has become one of the most infamous moments in Marvel history on both the big screen and comic book page. This effectively reshaped the universe as it was known, though not nearly as much as artifacts such as the demonic Darkhold or Cosmic Cube, both of which have literally transformed reality into something almost completely unrecognizable compared to its previous form.

In spite of how powerful all of these artifacts might be, the only one that compares to what the Reckoning unleashed in their final stand is the Heart of the Universe itself, which Thanos used to both annihilate and resurrect all of reality in 2003’s Marvel Universe: The End by Jim Starlin and Al Milgrom. That comparison doesn’t entirely hold up, however, as the Heart of the Universe is exists precisely as its name would imply. Thanos bringing the universe to its end by manipulating the Heart is one thing, but the Reckoning’s ultimate weapon being able to presumably eradicate all of existence is an entirely new kind of threat.

All of this on top of the fact that the Watchers could only contain the Reckoning’s sprawling creation speaks to how genuinely unstoppable it is. Assuming that still holds true, the Watchers are likely the only ones left who stand a chance of saving the Marvel Universe from the unnamed threat once more. Heroes like She-Hulk and the Fantastic Four might be able to stave off an alien invasion, but even they aren’t capable of keeping the entire universe from crumbling to dust. And if the Reckoning still have their worst creation on hand, it will only be a matter of time before they try to make that happen all over again.
