Is Gabi Butler in Season 2 of Cheer?

Arguably the most popular cheerleader on Navarro’s squad in Netflix’s Cheer, Gabi is noticeably absent at the beginning of Season 2.

WARNING: The following contains spoilers for Season 2 of Cheer, now streaming on Netflix.

The overnight success of Netflix’s Cheer following its Season 1 release in January 2020 catapulted the members of the Navarro College Cheerleading Squad to superstardom pretty much instantly. However, there was one member of the 14-time National Championship-winning team that was already boasting an impressive social media following of her own prior to Cheer airing on Netflix.

The Navarro Bulldogs Cheerleading Squad is a 40-person team of incredibly skilled athletes, led by head coach Monica Aldama and located in the small town of Corsicana, Texas. This talented group of students have been assembled from all over the country, coming from an array of different backgrounds but sharing one thing in common: a love of cheerleading. While some of the athletes cheer solely for Monica at Navarro, there are a few who also compete on All-Star Cheer Squads around Texas. Some of these cheerleaders have gained a huge following from their appearances at various competitions and cheer-related events, though one is arguably the most recognizable cheerleader in the world.

Who is Gabi Butler in Cheer?

Gabi is a talented 24-year-old who first started cheerleading competitively when she was eight years old. Gabi has an extensive resume, quite literally eating, sleeping and breathing cheerleading for most of her life, even having her own YouTube channel where she shares cheerleading tips and techniques. Specializing in tumbling and flying, it seems like Gabi can do it all, and throughout Cheer Season 1, she does. While practicing for hours on end, juggling her classes, and even participating in various sports campaigns, Gabi understands that she is a role model for young cheerleaders everywhere, and tries her best to live up to the high expectations set for her.

Gabi has a triumphant run by the end of Season 1, claiming victory with Navarro’s Squad at the National Cheerleading Championship held in Daytona Beach, Florida. However, at the end of the season, Gabi expresses a desire to leave Navarro and return home, leaving many fans devastated that they wouldn’t be seeing her cheering for Monica again, but also hopeful for whatever Gabi’s future held.

Does Gabi Come Back to Navarro in Season 2 of Cheer?

In the first episode of Cheer Season 2, Gabi is noticeably absent from the Navarro team as they begin practices for the new competition season, though this isn’t surprising considering where she left off in the last season. However, about halfway through the first episode, Monica announces to the team that Gabi will in fact be returning to the squad. While most are overjoyed at the fact that one of the strongest athletes on the team is returning, it does present a problem for Brooke, who has been filling in for a lot of Gabi’s parts as a placeholder. While Brook has been keeping up in Gabi’s spots in the routine, Monica is still mostly unsure about her.

Gabi’s return to Navarro means she has a guaranteed spot on the mat. With only 20 people out of the 40-person squad actually able to perform on the mat, everybody needs to step up their game. Unfortunately for Brooke, she doesn’t get to stay on mat upon Gabi’s return. Although devastating, Brooke managed to hold her own in the wake of high expectations, but Gabi is a hard act to follow. However, fans were overjoyed to see one of their favorite Navarro girls back on the mat in Season 2, fighting to claim victory in Daytona once again.

To see Gabi Butler’s return in Cheer, Season 2 is streaming on Netflix.
