Is Disney’s Moon Knight Separate from the MCU?

A few reports have been claiming that the upcoming Moon Knight series is not connected to the MCU, and series executive producer Grant Curtis did say some interesting things in a recent press release, but is the Oscar Isaac lead Disney+ series  really not part of the existing MCU, or is it simply a self-contained story that isn’t dependent upon happenings in other series?

In the release, Curtis says:

“There are multiple aspects of Moon Knight that get us internally jazzed at Marvel Studios. But one of the unique aspects of this character is it’s taking Marvel Studios to its Iron Man and Tony Stark roots. That was a character that was obviously built from the ground up, and it is the same with Marc Spector. We’re absolutely embracing the supernatural aspects of what was in publishing, the Egyptian gods, this ruthless Egyptian god Khonshu that manipulates Marc to do his bidding. We’re embracing all that. We love stuff that goes bump in the night.”

Still good and shows that Moon Knight is solidly in the same area as Blade and other supernatural series. Then he said:

“There’s no attachment to the current MCU. He’s brand-new, and he is going on a brand-new adventure. We really think the fans are going to enjoy it.”

You can interpret this statement as the series isn’t part of the MCU… or you could read it as we’re not going to be seeing other MCU characters showing up in the series because the story focuses on Marc Spector in the same way that Iron Man focused on Tony Stark. The series debuts on March 30th, and you shouldn’t expect any ties to what’s come before in the MCU.
