Is DC Killing Superman Again? Action Comics Writer Addresses Fans’ Fears

[ad_1]

Phillip Kennedy Johnson assuages fan fears that Clark Kent might be biting the bullet in his Action Comics run, stating: “Superman is forever.”

Action Comics writer Phillip Kennedy Johnson reassured fans worried about Clark Kent’s recent exodus to Warworld and his son succeeding him as the Superman of Earth.

“I’ve been hearing from a lot of Superman fans who are scared by all the recent speculation that Warworld is part of some shady, backdoor corporate plan to ‘replace’ Clark as Superman,” Johnson wrote on Twitter. “To those fans: I don’t know how to easy [sic] your worries without spoiling what’s coming, and I can’t do that. But I love Clark Kent as much as you do. Keep reading, and I promise we won’t betray you. Superman is forever.”

Johnson’s latest issue, Action Comics #1036, kicks off “The Warworld Saga,” a story that sees the Man of Steel venturing to the planet of the galactic tyrant Mongul. Assisting him is the latest iteration of the superhero team The Authority, and guarding Earth in his place is Superman’s son. Jon. Calling his tale a “science fiction epic saga for the ages,” Johnson has hinted that his Action Comics run will incorporate bits and pieces of a possible alternate future that was glimpsed in the pages of Future State Superman: Worlds of War — which showed an older Clark endlessly fighting in Mongul’s arena, his spirit undying despite his imprisonment.

The similarities between “The Warworld Saga” and the less-than-ideal outcome for Clark in Worlds of War may have contributed to the chatter that Johnson addressed in his tweet. The fact that Clark’s powers have slowly been fading and his body weakening due to radiation poisoning — as evidenced by the grey in his hair in both Action Comics #1036 and the Grant Morrison-written mini-series Superman and the Authority — likely only added fuel to the fire.

Nevertheless, Johnson has been extremely vocal about his love for Clark Kent in the past and pointed out during New York Comic Con this year that Superman was an inherently honorable icon who was always willing to see the good in everyone. Johnson also added that his Action Comics run would never feature an “evil Superman” like the version that appears in the Injustice franchise.

“…The real Superman would not do what he did in that game and comic series,” Johnson said at the time. “That’s not the real Superman. So, it’s important to me, like crucial to me, that we all have that voice, that person we can believe in that we know that would never do that, you know? I feel like it’s important for us to believe that that’s achievable, it is possible to have ultimate power, and not be a monster.”

Action Comics #1036 is now available in print and digitally from DC.
