Iron Man Gives His New Team an Awkward Name

Marvel Comics presents an exclusive preview of Iron Man #13, by Christopher Cantwell and Cafu.

Marvel Comics has given CBR an exclusive preview of Iron Man #13, by Christopher Cantwell, Cafu, Frank D’Armata and VC’s Joe Caramagna. In the preview, Tony Stark/Iron Man finally gives his team of ragtag heroes a name — though it’s probably not one that will stick around for very long.

In the current arc of Iron Man, Tony and his compatriots set out to stop Korvac from powering himself up using Galactus’ worldship, Tao II. However, Tony became separated from the rest of the group. Luckily, with some help from the Living Tribunal, Tony and his new ally — Arvo-X —  were able to beat the rest of the group to Tao II. A battle soon broke out between Tony and Korvac — and things didn’t go well. In the end, Korvac beat Tony badly and Arvo-X died. Then, the rest of Tony’s team arrived.

When Iron Man #13 picks up the story, Korvac takes his group through a portal. As Patsy Walker,/Hellcat, James Rhodes/War Machine, Misty Knight and Tony’s other team members regroup and prepare to go after them. Before they head out, Eugene Paul Patilio/Frog-Man notes that they may need a team name, just in case anyone dies.

In response, Tony declares them the “Space Friends.” The rest of the team seems confused by Tony’s choice, but he explains, “I mean… Look — we’re in space… and you’re my friends. Not my employees as I head one of you say earlier.” So the name itself is actually a response to the concern expressed in earlier issues that Tony has been treating his teammates like employees rather than partners. While it doesn’t seem likely to stick as a name, it is thematically appropriate for Iron Man.

You can see CBR’s exclusive preview of Iron Man #13 below alongside the solicitation information for the book. Releasing Oct. 13, Iron Man #13 features covers from Alex Ross and Joe Jusko.
