As the Avengers launch a mission to rescue She-Hulk from the Red Room, Iron Man and Captain America gain an edge through their new costumes.
WARNING: The following article contains spoilers for Avengers #47, on sale now from Marvel.
With one of the Avengers’ own kidnapped right from the team’s headquarters in Avengers Mountain, Earth’s Mightiest Heroes won’t rest until they’ve recovered their captured comrade and settle the score. In order to execute this polar rescue mission, veteran Avengers and longtime teammates Captain America and Iron Man have taken the opportunity to break out new superhero costumes that give both of them an edge against the rival Russian superhero team the Winter Guard as they launch a daring infiltration in order to free She-Hulk from imprisonment in the Red Room, deep in the frozen Siberian tundra.
As She-Hulk is subjected to torturous mental and physical conditioning in the Red Room to transform her into the ultimate weapon to be turned against the Avengers by the Winter Guard, Captain America and Iron Man make their covert strike, with their stark white costumes blending in with the snowy terrain and catching the soldiers stationed at the Red Room bunker’s front door completely unaware. Having dispatched the first wave of enemies without alerting the Winter Guard, the two Avengers’ suits quickly adapt and modify as they approach the locked entrance to accommodate the next step of the raid as the action in Avengers #47 — by Jason Aaron, Javier Garron, David Curiel and VC’s Cory Petit — escalates.
Now featuring a more technological display, complete with visible circuitry and and a more metallic layout, Iron Man is able to seamlessly interface with the door controls to cause it to open without sounding the alarm. Once inside, the two Avengers’ costumes visibly change again, this time taking on darker colors and hues allowing the heroes to blend in with the shadows as they navigate the bunker’s darkened halls. With diplomatic relations between the Avengers and Russia more fraught than ever, their goal is to learn where She-Hulk is being held and extract her without triggering a response from the Winter Guard that could potentially set off an all-out war.
One of the more intriguing details about the costumes is that they appear to be powered by nanotechnology, with the costume naturally pulling away to expose Steve Rogers’ head rather than having him physically pull down his star-spangled cowl. This also provides the means for the costumes to seamlessly transition through various states of organic camouflage on the fly and match the electronic interface of the Red Room’s security system when the two heroes breach the bunker. Stylistically, this matches Iron Man, Black Panther and Spider-Man’s Iron Spider armor employed in Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame, able to coat their bodies in seconds and unmask on command.
It is unclear if Iron Man or Black Panther provided the nanotechnology costume upgrades to the Avengers and if anyone else on the roster received the impressive sartorial changes, but Steve Rogers and Tony Stark have already put these costumes to good use against the Winter Guard and Red Room.
While the two heroes may have ultimately arrived too late to save She-Hulk from the machinations of the Red Room, these new costumes may have even more tricks up their sleeve as the Avengers set out to find their missing friend.
