The sequel to Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse may have leaked its title, which hints at a greater expansion into the Spider-Man multiverse.
The title of the long-awaited sequel to Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse may have just leaked online.
According to the LinkedIn profile of a CFX supervisor credited with working on both films, the Spider-Verse sequel due late next year will be titled Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse. The title was caught by The Cosmic Circus before the LinkedIn profile then changed the project name to “Untitled sequel to Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse.” Shortly after the title leak, the LinkedIn profile became inaccessible to the public, either because the account was deleted or it became private, lending credibility to the potential title of the animated Spider-Man sequel.
The LinkedIn account behind the leak belonged to CFX supervisor Simon Corbaux, whose recent work has included Disney’s Mulan remake and an upcoming animated project from Netflix called The Sea Beast. In addition to his Spider-Verse outings, Corbaux also contributed to Spider-Man: Far From Home, the MCU’s third Spider-Man film due later this year. Though the account is still inaccessible at the time of this writing, The Cosmic Circus’ screenshots of his profile clearly indicate the sequel will be titled Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse.
The title has yet to be confirmed by any other source. However, Across the Spider-Verse would be a natural follow-up to its predecessor, especially in terms of the direction of its story. Whereas the bulk of the first film took place in the universe in which Miles Morales takes up the Spider-Man moniker, the word “across” indicates that that the sophomore Spider-Verse entry would span multiple universes if the title is correct.
Since its release in 2018, Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse is lauded as one of the greatest animated films of all time. The movie earned praise from critics and audiences alike, earning it the Academy Award for Best Animated Feature Film. Starring Shameik Moore as Miles Morales, Jake Johnson as Peter B. Parker and Hailee Steinfeld as Gwen Stacy, Into the Spider-Verse weaved a tale of multiple Spider-Men and -Women from across the multiverse joining forces to protect their worlds, all the while exploring what it truly means to be Spider-Man.
In addition to Moore and Steinfeld reprising their roles as Miles Morales and Spider-Gwen, reports have indicated that the next Spider-Verse story will introduce audiences to even more Spider-Folks from Marvel history. Insecure star Issa Rae will reportedly join the lineup as Jessica Drew, also known as Spider-Woman, and Christopher Daniel Barnes may be returning to his role from Spider-Man: The Animated Series of the 1990s. Producers Phil Lord and Chris Miller also hinted at appearances from Cindy Moon/Silk and Takuya Yamashiro, the Japanese Spider-Man from the tokusatsu series of the same name.
Directed by Joaquim Dos Santos, Kemp Powers and Justin K. Thompson, the sequel to Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse is scheduled to hit theaters Oct. 7, 2022, regardless of its title.
