Into the Spider-Verse 2 First Look Hides a Moose-tastic Easter Egg

An easter egg from the trailer for Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse (Part One) references another film from Sony Pictures Animation.

The first trailer for Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse (Part One) included a reference to another Sony film, The Mitchells vs. The Machines.

Sony Pictures Animation revealed on Twitter that one of the toys on the shelf of Miles Morales’s childhood bedroom is a carved wooden moose.”Your Katie Vision is 20/20 if you spotted #TheMitchellsVsTheMachines Easter egg in the Spider-Man: Across the #SpiderVerse (Part One) first look,” the tweet read. It’s the same toy that Rick Mitchell gave to his daughter Katie in The Mitchells vs. the Machines, which holds great symbolic meaning throughout the film. Two of the co-writers on both Spider-Verse movies, Phil Lord and Chris Miller, served as producers for The Mitchells and are regular collaborators with SPA.

The first footage for the highly-anticipated sequel to 2018’s Into the Spider-Verse dropped on Dec. 4 and saw Miles and Gwen Stacy team up for an adventure across the multiverse. The teaser concluded with the revelation that Across the Spider-Verse would be the first part of a multi-part saga. Miller confirmed that work on Part Two was well underway, saying, “It’s true, [Spider-Man: Across The Spider-Verse] is Part One of two films. Me, [Philip Lord], [Justin K. Thompson], [Kemp Powers], [Joaquim Dos Santos] and an incredible crew are working on both films simultaneously!”

Miller also confirmed that Oscar Isaac would return as Miguel O’Hara, aka Spider-Man 2099, after appearing in a post-credit scene for Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, along with the voice of Miles Morales Shameik Moore, Hailee Steinfeld as Gwen Stacy, “and a bunch of old friends… and many new ones.”

Of the new friends, the only not officially confirmed cast member is Issa Rae as Jessica Drew/Spider-Woman, though her role in the film was reported back in June. Other reports indicate that the variant of Peter Parker from the ’90’s Spider-Man animated series will figure into Across the Spider-Verse, with Christopher Daniel Barnes reprising his role as the Web-Slinger. Additionally, Lord and Miller teased the possibility that Takuya Yamashiro, the lead character from the 1978 tokusatsu series colloquially referred to as Japanese Spider-Man will figure into the story, as well as Cindy Moon, aka Silk. Rumors also indicate the movie’s villain will be longtime Spider-villain The Spot.

Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse (Part One) swings into theaters on Oct. 7, 2022, with Part Two expected to follow in 2023. The Mitchells vs. the Machines is currently available to stream on Netflix.
