While Cameron Chase sticks to the shadows of the DC Universe, Infinite Frontier is about to push the DEO agent into a multiversal crisis.

With the launch of the new Infinite Frontier series, DC’s next multiversal epic is underway. While the stories of more prominent characters like Barry Allen and Roy Harper will be well known to fans,, one of the key players in this new series, Cameron Chase, may be somewhat more unknown.
Cameron Chase, D.E.O. agent, will be one of the more important figures in the Infinite Frontier series but has rarely had the spotlight since her 1998 introduction and short-lived solo series. Chase was created by Dan Curtis Johnson and J.H. Williams III and first appeared in Batman #550. In this story, Chase was one of the D.E.O.’s newest recruits and only put on assignment because she was in Gotham at the time. Since then she has risen up the ranks of the clandestine organization and even became its director at one point.
Chase’s father was a hero known as the Acro-Bat. He was part of a small superhero team called the Justice Experience that existed after the Justice Society of America disbanded but before the Justice League formed. Chase’s father, along with many other members of Justice Experience, was killed by a villain named Doctor Trap. Instead of resenting Trap for her father’s death, Chase blamed her father for choosing to be a costumed vigilante. This made Chase resent all superheroes, which led to her falling in with the D.E.O. and their mission to keep tabs on meta-humans and stop them where necessary.
Her career with the D.E.O. has seen her encounter many powered individuals stronger than herself, such as Martian Manhunter and Kate Spencer’s Manhunter. However, her own hidden metahuman abilities allow her to level the playing field and explain why she’s such a valuable asset for the D.E.O. — Chase possesses the power to dampen metahuman abilities. Though she cannot remove powers completely, she can weaken any opponent and make them more manageable in a fight, a useful power for someone who goes up against metahumans on a regular basis.
By the time of the New 52, Chase was one of the D.E.O.’s more valuable assets, working directly with its director, Mister Bones, to bring in Batwoman before the D.E.O. decided to work with the vigilante instead. After leaving Gotham, Chase was next seen in National City, swapping out Batwoman for Supergirl and her old job as a field agent for the position of D.E.O. director. This promotion didn’t last long though, as Chase’s former boss, Mister Bones, forced her to resign and took her place.
Chase briefly worked for the F.B.I. when Brian Michael Bendis and Alex Maleev’s Event: Leviathan destroyed the D.E.O. along with a number of other clandestine organizations. Now that DC is in the Infinite Frontier era, the D.E.O. is back and Cameron Chase returns in Infinite Frontier #1.
Infinite Frontier‘s companion series, Infinite Frontier: Secret Files, revealed that Chase had created profiles on key characters in the Infinite Frontier series, such as the Totality and President Superman. Director Bones was reviewing these files because the D.E.O. now believes the multiverse is a threat and Infinite Frontier #1 sees Bones bring Chase in on this new mission.
Whilst on vacation, Chase was approached by Bones about the multiverse, the fact it’s now public knowledge and how that makes the general public worried. Bones’ offer to work on the D.E.O.’s new multiverse mission sounds like a request at first but Bones, knowing Chase hates him, makes sure she can’t turn him down.
Though exactly what Bones is blackmailing Chase with remains a secret, it’s definitely something that makes Chase very uneasy. Chase may not be able to turn down Bones but it’s obvious she doesn’t see eye to eye with the D.E.O. director. That may lead her to act against the D.E.O.’s interests this one time when she gets involved in the major events of Infinite Frontier.
