A team of Justice League and Justice Society veterans has reassembled for Infinite Frontier, revitalizing a classic DC team in the process.
WARNING: The following contains spoilers for Infinite Frontier #3, on sale now from DC.
While Infinite Frontier had opened up quite the list of mysteries to be explored in the reborn DC Multiverse, one of the most troubling and personal involved a direct attack on the legacy of the Justice Society of America. While the Justice Society was restored to reality during the events of Geoff Johns and Gary Frank’s Doomsday Clock, reuniting the Golden Age heroes with many of their compatriots, the team’s familiar headquarters came under attack at the start of Infinite Frontier, with several of its younger heroes left missing in the immediate aftermath.
And as the location of Jade and the other missing heroes is discovered, it appears they have reformed as Infinite Incorporated, a new version of a classic DC team with a slight change to reflect the story in Infinite Frontier #3, by Joshua Williamson, Paul Pelletier, Jesus Merino, Tom Derenick, Xermanico, Norm Rapmund, Raul Fernandez, Romulo Fajardo, Jr. and Tom Napolitano.
This team is a variation on Infinity, Inc., created by Roy Thomas, Jerry Ordway and Mike Machlan in 1983’s All-Star Squadron #25. Taking place on the alternate universe of Earth-2, where the Golden Age heroes thrived in the pre-Crisis on Infinite Earths multiverse, Infinity, Inc. was formed and led by the original Star-Spangled Kid and consisted of young superheroes that took on the legacy of several Justice Society figures but had been denied full admission into the Justice Society proper. Integrated into the main DC Universe following the Crisis, Infinity, Inc. became based out of Los Angeles and teamed up with the Outsiders on several occasions. And now, many of Infinity, Inc.’s veteran members prominently lead the charge of this new team.
Following the attack on Justice Society headquarters, all of the heroes that went missing were members of the classic Infinity, Inc., including Alan Scott’s daughter Jade and other legacy heroes. Led by Jade, this group of returning heroes includes Power Girl, the cousin of DC’s original Superman; Damage, the son of Al Pratt’s Atom; the Atom-Smasher, Al Pratt’s godson; and Yolanda Montez’s Wildcat, Ted Grant’s goddaughter.
While Alan and his son Obsidian assumed a supervillain with a grudge for the Justice Society was behind the disappearances and set out to the darkest of the corners of the DCU to find out who is responsible, Roy Harper ultimately comes across the missing heroes within the Bleed, the space between different universes.
.
Since their introductions, all of these heroes have lived and, in some cases, died while in the general vicinity of Infinity, Inc. and the Justice Society. After their histories were obscured by the reality-reshaping events of the New 52 and DC Rebirth, these heroes were resurrected and returned by the reality-altering events of Doomsday Clock ahead of the Infinite Frontier era.
How the heroes on Infinite Inc. decided to form the new team and end up confronting the D.E.O.’s activities in the Bleed are currently unknown. And with the multiverse becoming increasingly more prominent, there remains the distinct possibility that these heroes are not from the main DCU but an alternate universe where the familiar faces lived much different lives than their counterparts. Regardless of their origin, the legacy of Infinity, Inc. lives on as its classic members join forces to apparently work against their old teammate Mister Bones and his machinations to keep the multiverse out of the DC Universe.
