Inferno’s Most Important Mutant Could Doom Two Marvel Powerhouses

[ad_1]

Inferno #1 features the return of a very dangerous figure who may pose a serious threat for two of Marvel’s most powerful mutants.

WARNING: The following article contains spoilers for Inferno #1, on sale now from Marvel Comics.

The first issue of Inferno (by Jonathan Hickman, Valerio Schiti, David Curiel and VC’s Joe Sabino) paints a frightening picture of what may be coming in the X-Men’s near future, thanks in no small part to a long-simmering subplot that calls back to House of X and Moira MacTaggert’s execution at the hands of Irene Adler, the mutant also known as Destiny. Currently, that precognitive mutant is dead, with Moira insisting that Xavier and Magneto not resurrect her. Unfortunately, it seems that there was a larger play in motion, as the issue concludes with Mystique introducing the newly resurrected Destiny to the Council as their newest member. Before her inevitable confrontation with Moira, however, Destiny may have unfinished business with the powerful mutants who murdered her, namely Legion and the Shadow King.

Possessing the ability to see the future, Destiny was created by Chris Claremont and John Byrne in 1981’s Uncanny X-Men #141. She eventually met her end at the hands of a Shadow-King-controlled Legion in Uncanny X-Men #255 (by Claremont, Marc Silvestri, and Dan Green) during the “Muir Island Saga.” Following the events of House of X, Mystique has been campaigning for her resurrection only for the requests to be repeatedly denied by Xavier and Magneto.

Mystique seems unaware of the agreement made between Moira, Xavier and Magneto as the three believe precognitive mutants cannot be on Krakoa as it may impact the island’s overall balance. For Moira, there could be ulterior motives as to why she does not want Destiny alive. In one of her past lives, Destiny visited Moira when she found a cure for the mutant gene. Destiny and Mystique saw it as a way for humans to destroy all mutants and threatened her to never go down this path again in her other lives. She promised Moira if she did, she would find her before her powers manifest and would kill her, which would prevent her from being reincarnated. She then burned Moira alive, slowly so she would always remember her mistake. With the impending arrival of Nimrod and the dystopian future she seeks to prevent quickly approaching, Moira may be considering that ‘cure’ once again, and a living Destiny could interfere with her strategy.

However, Destiny may be more concerned with seeking justice against her murderers than dealing with Moira’s plans. The Omega-level mutant Legion recently resurfaced in Way of X #1 (by Si Spurrier, Bob Quinn, Java Tartaglia and VC’s Clayton Cowles). After Nightcrawler mercifully killed him while he being held captive by Orchis, Legion was resurrected on Krakoa, and has since developed a close relationship with the veteran X-Man, standing beside him against the threat of Onslaught.

The Shadow King, on the other hand, has continued to be a villain since he used Legion to kill Destiny on Muir Island. Thought to be destroyed after attempting to trap Xavier on the astral plane, Amahl Farouk ventured to Krakoa, where he has been manipulating and causing trouble for the New Mutants.

The coming issues of Inferno should shed some light as to what Destiny will do next. The question now is whether she will prioritize the actions of Moira over confronting the powerful mutants who were ultimately responsible for her death.
