We had the pleasure of chatting with the creator of Hungry Horrors! Here at All Age of Geek we love supporting indie creators! If you’d like to work with us for reviews, gameplay, and interviews contact us HERE!
Tell us about your game?
Hungry Horrors is an indie roguelike deckbuilder. You play as a princess who must save her kingdom from ravenous monsters. Rather than fighting them, your goal is to feed them until they are satisfied and allow you to pass. However, the monsters are quite picky, so you need to ensure you serve dishes they like, or you’ll face serious consequences. The game is set in a medieval fantasy version of the British and Irish Isles, featuring monsters rooted directly in folklore and traditional dishes still enjoyed in various regions of Britain and Ireland. As a roguelite deckbuilder, your objective is to create a deck full of dishes and embark on a “run,” where you discover new recipes, gather ingredients, and complete quests to unlock new powers. Each time you die, you return to your base, where you can upgrade and adjust your strategy for the next run.
What inspires your work?
This game was inspired by our love for turn-based combat and games that can be played on handheld devices like the Steam Deck. The main gameplay loop draws from a mix of Slay the Spire, Hades, and Loop Hero. The concept of feeding monsters came from the anime Delicious in Dungeon, while the aesthetic mood board for the game embodies gothic camp, akin to The Addams Family or Tim Burton films, with a touch of British humor.
Goals for your game?
Our short-term goal is to bring British and Irish myths, folklore, and traditions into the gaming world, similar to how Hades represents Greek mythology or The Witcher showcases Slavic legends. In the long term, we’d love to expand the game beyond the British Isles to explore monsters and cuisines from different cultures around the world.
Advice to new devs?
Although we have many years of experience in the tech and development industry, this is our first game, so it’s challenging to give advice without proven success. However, one piece of advice I can confidently offer is to read, listen, and learn. There are countless free resources available for every aspect of the indie game development journey, from Discord servers to blogs, videos, and podcasts. Make use of these resources, learn as much as you can, and experiment for yourself.
Where can folks support your work?
