Immortal Hulk’s Gamma Flight Gives Absorbing Man an Adamantium Upgrade

[ad_1]

As Immortal Hulk’s allies step out in Gamma Flight, a former Hulk and Thor villain gets an adamantium upgrade in a heartwarming gesture.

WARNING: The following contains spoilers for Gamma Flight #1 by Al Ewing, Crystal Frasier, Lan Medina, Antonio Fabela, and VC’s Joe Sabino, on sale now.

The Marvel Universe has always been a fantastical and terrifying place, and the Immortal Hulk’s corner of it might just be the epitome of that sentiment. With the many horrific layers of secrets surrounding Gamma Mutates that have been revealed in recent years, it is hard to imagine anything hopeful coming out of the horrors of that title, yet the heroes of Gamma Flight have managed to do just that.

And in Gamma Flight #1, Carl Creel and Mary MacPherran, the former villain Titania jokingly proposes to Absorbing Man with a ring made out of secondary adamantium.

Gamma Flight Adamantium Ring

Absorbing Man and Titania joined Gamma Flight following Carl’s most recent battle with the Hulk in New Mexico. At the time, Carl had been possessed by the One-Below-All, and after regaining control of himself helped free everyone that he had also left trapped in the Below-Place. After this, he was offered a place within Gamma Flight, which he agreed to take as long as Titania could join him. The two haven’t just been powerful additions to Gamma Flight’s roster, though. They have also provided the rest of the team with some much-needed levity, as well as a safehouse now that they are all on the run.

Being at home gives Mary a chance to do some digging, and before long she has found something that had been lost for years. On one knee, Mary proposes to Carl with a secondary adamantium ring. He is happy to accept, and it might just be the sweetest moment that this classic couple has had in a very long time. It also provides Carl with a much-needed addition to his arsenal, one that he makes good use of in short order.

While this type of adamantium isn’t quite as strong as the kind that famously coats Wolverine’s skeleton, it’s still strong enough to withstand pretty much anything short of a punch from a Thor-level powerhouse.

When the team faces another Gamma Mutate, Carl absorbs the adamantium of his new ring and leaps into battle. His secondary adamantium form isn’t enough to put a dent in their new foe, but it does keep him from suffering any of his own. Puck and Doc Sasquatch step in to defuse the situation, which proves surprisingly successful, at least until the police arrive to escalate things by shooting Creel in the head, which Titania does not take kindly to.

Adamantium Absorbing Man

Titania was introduced in 1984’s Secret Wars #3 by Jim Shooter and Michael Zeck. Shortly after Mary’s transformation, she and Carl Creel began a romantic relationship with one another. Little more than a decade later the two were wed in 1996’s Avengers: Unplugged #4 by Glenn Herdling and John Statema. The ceremony was stumbled upon by She-Hulk, who assumed it to be a supervillain gathering of a nefarious purpose and called in the Avengers. Thankfully, the happy couple was able to wed after the heroes had realized their mistake, even though the event even made Creel question whether or not going straight was a good idea after all.

It seems like Carl Creel is still struggling with whether or not he actually wants to be a hero, although he has no questions about when to stay out of his wife’s way. Titania has always been a force to be reckoned with. Although Absorbing Man is no slouch, his new ring gives him instant access to absorb the properties of one of the strongest metals in the Marvel Universe.

After having been villains together for so long, it’s refreshing to see Absorbing Man and Titania playing the role of heroes together while keeping their marriage going strong. On their own, these two are formidable opponents, but their bond is as strong as true adamantium when they’re together.
