Sean Lewis, Brett Booth, Javier Fernandez, Stephen Segovia, Marcio Takara and Philip Tan join Todd McFarlane for King Spawn #1 from Image Comics.

Image Comics has revealed a peek at the upcoming first issue of King Spawn, a new series that will be Spawn creator Todd McFarlane’s first monthly comic devoted to the character since 1992.

Aside from McFarlane, a superstar creative team of big names has been assembled for the series, including writer Sean Lewis and artists Brett Booth, Javier Fernandez, Stephen Segovia, Marcio Takara and Philip Tan.

A selection of covers by Puppeteer Lee, Sean Gordon Murphy and a special work-in-progress sketch by Greg Capullo were unveiled by Image Comics, along with interior art by Javier Fernandez.

King Spawn #1 will be a supersized 56-page issue, with Image touting the book as a release “nearly three decades in the making.” More specifically, King Spawn is the first instance that a new first issue of a Spawn comic has been available in monthly form in over 28 years, and is poised to feature the return of a fan-favorite villain from the original Spawn series in its first story arc.

The series comes on the heels of Spawn’s Universe, a one-shot that debuted in June and focused on varied hellspawn from the past and present, including Gunslinger Spawn, Medieval Spawn and She-Spawn.

“My goal is to give fans twice as much Spawn titles to read than they had before… and at the lowest price possible!” McFarlane said. “And by the end of the year, there will be a Spawn-related book available for fans every week of the month. We will be introducing new heroes and villains along with classic characters as we expand the Spawn Universe into the future.”

In 2019, the original Spawn series achieved the prestigious honor as the longest-running creator-owned comic series with the release of Issue 301, winning McFarlane a place in the Guinness World Records.

In an interview with CBR in May, McFarlane attributed the comic’s longevity to “a value in being around, just sort of bleeding outwards.”

“Spawn has had that, and there’s been some quality that goes along with it,” McFarlane said. “There’s been toys and video games and the movie along the way to help put it in the psyche. Issue #300 had a bit of a moment where we set a record and caught people’s attention again and now Spawn is going to expand into a universe.”

King Spawn #1 goes on sale Aug. 18 from Image Comics.
