iCarly: Freddie and Spencer Are Even Weirder in the Revival

[ad_1]

In the Paramount+ revival of iCarly, the second episode doubles down on Spencer and Freddie’s odd bond by making them even weirder than before.

WARNING: The following contains spoilers for Season 1, Episode 2, “iHate Carly,” in the iCarly revival, now streaming now on Paramount+.

In the original iCarly on Nickelodeon, Spencer (Jerry Trainor) and Freddie (Nathan Kress) had some pretty weird moments together, on and off Carly’s (Miranda Cosgrove) set. Sure, they were as close as brothers, but at times, it felt too candid, personal and like they had no problem intruding each other’s space, as well as Carly and Sam’s. The Paramount+ revival doubles down on this by making them even weirder than before.

After trying to find Carly’s online hater at a cafe, Spencer pepper sprays himself by accident and becomes temporarily blind. As such, he asks Freddie to be his eyes, which he agrees to as it doesn’t seem that harmful. But it gets really awkward when Freddie’s forced to hold Spencer up and do Zumba with him.

He’s basically puppeteering Spencer, who has no problem with Freddie really being up close, intimately at that, with hands around his waist. He doesn’t care about the sweat dripping on Freddie, which makes Freddie uncomfortable but he just doesn’t want to say a thing. He’s just trying to be as kind and as gentle as possible, feeling sorry for Spencer, which does fit his accommodating character over the years.

But Spencer kicks it up a notch when he demands that Freddie take him to pee. Freddie doesn’t have the heart to say no and an argument breaks out later where it’s revealed that the logistical operations in the toilet didn’t go smoothly as Spencer actually peed on Freddie.

Still, Freddie’s a true friend and doesn’t bail — that is until he realizes that Spencer has been faking it, milking it for what it’s worth. He catches him doing crosswords, which breaks the truth down: Spencer got his sight back but liked the convenience. Karma would catch up, though, because when he was blind, Spencer got a girl to feel sorry for him and agree to a date. Sadly, while putting on cologne, he sprays some in his eyes and gets blinded again.

He visits Freddie in the hallway, making an indecent proposal for Freddie to, well, guide his hands and mouth on the date. Basically, he needs to be piloted, which comes off as creepy. Freddie silently departs but Spencer keeps rambling, making offensive statements about the date, not realizing the woman has gotten off the elevator.

She hears his sadistic plan and slaps him, letting him know he really needs to change. Hopefully Spencer learns his lesson because it does seem like Freddie won’t be entertaining their quaint antics anymore. He seems to have outgrown some of their wacky things and needs some boundaries to be set.

iCarly stars Miranda Cosgrove, Nathan Kress, Jerry Trainor, Laci Mosley and Jaidyn Triplett. The first three episodes are streaming on Paramount+ with new episodes every Thursday.
