Hunter x Hunter: 10 Facts You Never Knew About Meruem

[ad_1]

One of the most influential characters to ever appear in Hunter x Hunter, Meruem was the King of the Chimera Ants. Being the King, he was the strongest of them all and was referred to as the pinnacle of evolution. He was also one of the toughest opponents to ever exist in the series so far, considering that he and his Chimera Ant forces destroyed numerous Hunters, including Chairman Netero, in very close battles.

Meruem was the main antagonist of the Chimera Ant arc of the series which is considered to be one of the best story arcs in the entirety of anime and manga verse. As such, he’s one of the most popular characters out there. Here are 10 things about Meruem that you should know as Hunter x Hunter fans.

10 His Debut Was Earlier In The Anime Compared To The Manga

The Chimera Ant arc took place late in Hunter x Hunter. This also meant that Meruem himself appeared quite late into the series. In the manga, Meruem’s silhouette was shown to readers in Chapter 197 and his full debut came in Chapter 213 of the story.

In the anime, Meruem’s silhouette appeared in Episode 87, while he made his full appearance in Episode 91. The anime had much better pacing, which explained the early introduction. Thanks to the anime being a faithful adaptation of the manga, there isn’t much of a difference between the two mediums.

9 He Was Extremely Young But Extremely Powerful

Meruem didn’t live long after being born. While he was out and about gathering his Royal Guards and setting out to create the world he wanted, Netero and the others who infiltrated NGL met him in battle.

After Meruem finished his fight against Netero, he ended up getting poisoned and died subsequently. Surprisingly, Meruem was just 40 days old by the time of his death, which makes him one of the youngest characters to appear in the series, if not the youngest. Despite being so young, Meruem was, undoubtedly, the strongest.

8 His Nen Type Is Specialization

Being the King of the Ants, Meruem was born with incredible Nen abilities and did not need to unlock the power to use them. His type of Nen was Specialization, which made him different from all the other types.

Meruem’s most powerful Nen ability was called Aura Synthesis and it worked by him devouring other Nen users. Each time he ate them, their aura synthesized with his own and he became much stronger. Undoubtedly, this is one of Meruem’s strongest abilities that we saw and is part of what made him so dangerous.

7 Other Nen Abilities Were Accessible To Him After He Was Revived From Near Death

Along with Aura Synthesis, Meruem had other powerful Nen abilities accessible to him as well. He obtained these powers after being revived from a near-death state by Shaiapouf and Menthuthuyoupi.

By taking in their Aura, Meruem was able to gain Menthuthuyoupi’s Metamorphosis and Rage Blast. Both of these abilities gave him a whole new dimension of abilities and made him much stronger than he was already. He also gained a power similar to that of Shaiapouf’s although he made it stronger than it already was.

6 Meuruem Also Gained Access To Using Photon

While Meruem gained the abilities of Rage Blast and Metamorphosis directly from Menthuthuyoupi, the same wasn’t true for Shaiapouf. Instead of using Spiritual Message, Meruem gained access to a power known as Photon.

Using this power, he was able to deploy his aura into his surroundings as microscopic particles and spread them around with his En. Whenever the particle came in contact with anything, Meruem was able to find out everything about it, from its shape to size and even its emotions. Truly, this was what made Meruem a force to be reckoned with, especially after being revived from a near-death state.

5 Meruem Was Initially Prideful But Grew More Compassionate Later On

Meruem was a creature full of pride when he was born. He did not show any remorse when killing humans, or even those of his own kind. He was also partly responsible for the death of his mother and was seemingly unbothered by it.

However, after meeting Komugi and Netero, his view on humans changed and he became much more compassionate. Towards the end of his short life, Meruem had matured enough to the point where he even considered living together with humans. Unfortunately for him, he did not live long after being poisoned.

4 He Survived The Most Powerful Of Chairman Netero’s Attacks

Much like everything else about him, Meruem’s durability appeared to be of the highest order. He was able to fight against Netero’s 100-type Guanyin Bodhisattva without much trouble. While the ability itself was supersonic, Meruem was able to deal with it very easily. Towards the end, however, he started feeling a dull pain.

The strongest technique available to Netero, known as the Zero Hand, was also tanked by him and he sustained only minor injuries in the process. To top it all off, he was able to survive even after being hit with the Rose explosion, although it left him in a near-death state.

3 His Name Has Egyptian Origins

The name ‘Meruem’ appears to hold a significant meaning. According to his mother, the Chimera Ant Queen, Meruem means “the light that illuminates all.” According to some speculation, Meruem comes from the Egyptian word “mry,” which means beloved.

Togashi, however, hasn’t confirmed any such thing, but it makes sense considering the fact that the names for the Royal Guards are all inspired by Egyptian deities as well.

2 His Stats Are So High That There Are No Exact Ratings

Being the strongest character in the entirety of Hunter x Hunter so far, it is not a surprise to see that Meruem has the highest known stats as well. In fact, his stats are so high that there isn’t even an exact rating for them.

While most characters are graded out of 5, all of Meruem’s skills, including Mind, Skill, Body, Nen, and Ingenuity, are rated as 5+/5. How high these figures actually are was never revealed to readers and viewers alike.

1 He Looks Similar To Freeza From Dragon Ball

As noticed by many, Meruem has some references to the characters from Dragon Ball. When it comes to appearance, Meruem looks a lot like Freeza. The two share a similar body structure and even their deadly aura is quite similar.

When it comes to powers and personality, however, Meruem resembled Cell because he considers himself to be the perfect being and the pinnacle of evolution. Just like Cell, Meruem had an urge to see how much potential he had, which is what he found out in his fight against Netero. Furthermore, the bond that Meruem forms with Komugi is similar to the one that Majin Buu forms with Mr. Satan in Dragon Ball.
