While August’s lineup lacks a AAA heavy-hitter, it’s full of exciting indies, including a couple of standouts that released last year. Here’s what you should know about this month’s Humble Choice games.
Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night
Fans of classic Castlevania games who haven’t played Bloodstained yet should absolutely check it out. The side-scrolling action-RPG was produced by Koji Igarashi, who worked on Symphony of the Night, which Ritual of the Night takes clear inspiration from. Set in Industrial Revolution England, the game follows Miriam, an orphan who was cursed by an alchemist and must fight her way through a demon-infested castle to take down its master. As expected of a Metroidvania, Ritual of the Night encourages players to explore and return to previous areas to access previously-inaccessible areas. The game was praised when it launched in 2019, and publisher 505 Games recently announced a sequel, so now is a great time for gamers who missed out to play this indie darling.
Last Oasis
Described as a “Nomadic Survival MMO,” Last Oasis is an open-world game currently in early access where players must travel and survive on an Earth that has stopped rotating. Following a cataclysmic event, the planet has been rendered mostly inhospitable, with one half burning in the Sun, and the other freezing in the darkness. Just a small area between the two halves can support life, forcing all living creatures to migrate. Players will have to explore to find food and water and fight off dangerous creatures and pirates in dynamic, skill-based combat. Last Oasis offers plenty to do, and, with the game still in early access, it is sure to evolve in the coming months and years.
Superliminal
Superliminal is a mind-bending first-person puzzle game full of optical illusions. In it, players are trapped in a dream world where nothing is as it seems, and they will have to think outside to box to get away. This is a unique and innovative game that will test your definition of perception, making it perfect for fans of games like The Stanley Parable and Portal.
We Need to Go Deeper
The co-op indie roguelike We Need to Go Deeper is a Jules Verne-inspired adventure where players will have to work together to successfully operate a submarine. The group’s goal is to reach the bottom of a deep trench known as The Living Infinite, and each member of the two to four person crew will need to fight off dangers and handle any issues that arise on the ship. This will require communication and teamwork as each person figures out the role they must play and how they can contribute to the effort.
As Far as the Eye
While the game’s colorful art makes it look like a typical casual indie game about anthropomorphic animals, As Far as the Eye is actually a challenging management sim where players must help shapeshifting Pupils travel to The Eye, which is located at the center of the world. This game combines elements of games like Civilization with roguelike elements. Players will need to build a mobile village, send Pupils off to gather resources, and ensure they have enough to survive and move on to the next area. Each map and Pupil is procedurally-generated, adding another layer of complexity to the game.
Drake Hollow
This open-world adventure game tasks one to four players with exploring and surviving in The Hollow, an endless procedurally-generated world that is a dark parallel of sorts to reality. Drake Hollow‘s colorful world is plagued by a mysterious evil, and players will have to rescue Drakes to return home. Whether playing alone or with others, there is a lot to do, including building and expanding a camp, fighting beasts and taking care of the Drakes.
Carto
Carto is a unique and adorable puzzle game that is all about manipulating maps. Players are Carto, a young girl who is separated from her grandmother during a storm and must find her way back using her cartography skills. By finding new map pieces and moving them around the grid, players can travel to new areas and complete objectives. While Carto‘s core mechanics are simple, some of its puzzles will require players to think outside the box and follow environmental clues.
Out of Space
This local and online co-op multiplayer game is all about living in a house in space with friends. In Out of Space, players will move into a procedurally-generated spaceship house, making it clean, comfortable and sustainable — while also contending with an alien infestation. It mixes causal gameplay, short rounds and simple tasks with strategy, as players will need to make short and long-term decisions throughout the game. Those who enjoy chaotic co-op games like Overcooked will definitely want to try Out of Space during their next game night.
Nowhere Prophet
Nowhere Prophet is a roguelike deckbuilder that fans of games like Slay the Spire and Griftlands will want to check out. In this post-apocalyptic sci-fi world inspired by Indian culture, players will lead a group of refugees across randomized wastelands full of slavers and rogue machines on their way to the mysterious Crypt. The player character will use their power to sense and affect electrical currents to guide their people, engaging in turn-based card battles when necessary and recruiting more followers to gain more cards.
Blue Fire
The 3D action-platformer Blue Fire takes players across the desolated kingdom of Penumbra through a series of increasingly difficult challenges. Penumbra is full of enemies to take on using various fighting styles, and there are plenty of quests, rewards and secrets to uncover over the course of the game. Blue Fire was widely praised when it released earlier this year, so this is a great chance for those who missed out to give it a try.
Cepheus Protocol
Inspired by classic RTS games like Company of Heroes, Cepheus Protocol is an action strategy game set in a world where a virus has turned thousands into mindless beasts that continue to mutate. As Captain Winters, a military officer working with the Center for Epidemic Research and Control, players will fight those infected with the Pangu Virus across different open environments and try to survive a threat that grows more powerful each day.
ENCODYA
The point-and-click cyberpunk adventure ENCODYA follows Tina, a nine year-old orphan who lives in Neo-Berlin with her robot guardian, SAM-53. When Tina learns her father left her with a mission to save the world from grayness, she and SAM set off to finish what he started. Combining the storytelling of Studio Ghibli, the world of Blade Runner and the gameplay of Monkey Island, ENCODYA is both a throwback to a classic genre and a forward-looking futuristic adventure.
