How to Build Peacemaker in DnD

[ad_1]

With the recent release of Peacemaker, many D&D players may want to base their next character after the government-enlisted supersoldier.

Following the release of Peacemaker on HBO Max, it’s fair to say that the character is lingering in the viewers’ minds. Played by John Cena, Peacemaker represents the inversions of everything audiences expect from a government-enlisted supersoldier. He doesn’t save cats from trees or stop planes crashing; he’s the strong arm of his government, a cold-blooded killer and sometimes slightly unstable. Still, his recent popularity means many Dungeons & Dragons players will be itching to role-play a character like (or based off of) him.

While not all Dungeon Masters permit firearms, these modern weapons do exist in Fifth Edition. While Peacemaker may be a better fit for a more modern-themed tabletop-RPG like Cyberpunk, World of Darkness or Starfinder, that doesn’t mean it can’t be done. 5e‘s modular system of character creation and play means it’s easy to mix and match mechanics to suit the players’ own ends.

The Best D&D Race for Peacemaker

Peacemaker is obviously Human, but within D&D, Variant Human is the best choice as it allows the player to select a free feat and a +1 bonus to two core stats. For the attribute bonuses, focus on Strength and Dexterity. As for his feat, the first and most obvious choice is Gunner from Tasha’s Cauldron of Everything, which provides proficiency with firearms, ignores their loading properties, removes the disadvantage penalty for being within melee range of an enemy and increases Peacemaker’s Dexterity by one (to a maximum of 20).

However, firearms aren’t always readily available in every campaign setting. If the DM doesn’t allow guns, take the Tough Feat. Upon taking Tough, Peacemaker’s hit point maximum increases by twice his level, and he gains a +2 bonus to his health along with the basic health increase he gets every level. This feat represents Peacemaker’s above-average Strength and will allow him to better weather combat encounters.

Back Background for Peacemaker

The obvious choice for the background is Soldier. Peacemaker was trained by his government to kill for them. Still, there are a number of other backgrounds that could fit. Acolyte could represent Peacemaker as a deadly crusader in what he feels is true peace. It’s great for representing the ideological side of his character as opposed to his raw physical prowess. There is also the Faction Agent background that can be used to reflect his allegiance to his chosen organization or country in a way that’s more mechanical than just role-play focused.

Best Class For Peacemaker

John Cena in Peacemaker Episode 3

The obvious choice for Peacemaker’s class is Fighter, as it offers the best in balanced physical and ranged damage. For fighting style, Peacemaker would benefit from one of two options. If the DM allows the use of firearms, Archery would be the best option as it gives a +2 bonus to attack rolls with ranged weapons, which is perfect for Peacemaker and his trusty side-arm. If firearms aren’t an option, then Defense is always a useful option for that +1 to Armor Class.

As for subclass, Battlemaster is perfect for Peacemaker. It’ll allow him to perform actions in combat that can better present him as a skilled combatant with access to a collection of powerful maneuvers. Ambush is a great option, as it whch allows Peacemaker to add a superiority dice to Stealth checks and Initiative.

There’s also Parry, which allows Peacemaker to reduce the incoming damage of an attack by an amount equal to a roll of a superiority dice plus Peacemaker’s Dexterity Modifier, and Evasive Footwork, which lets Peacemaker add a superiority dice to his Armor Class when he moves. The great thing about Battlemaster is it’s totally customizable, allowing the player to pick and swap out Maneuvers based on what works best for them.

Important Ability Scores for Peacemaker

Freddie Stroma and John Cena in Peacemaker Episode 2

Peacemaker’s attributes can be arranged one of two ways depending on the campaign setting and what aspects of the character the player wants to emphasize. First, Peacemaker’s most important attributes are Strength (for melee attacks), Constitution (for absorbing damage) and Dexterity (for Initiative, Armor Class and firing his sidearm). For a Peacemaker build with a melee focus, prioritize Strength and Constitution to increase his effectiveness in melee combat, while Dexterity should be a favored third option.

For a ranged Peacemaker with more of a focus on his side-arm, it’s best to prioritize Dexterity and Constitution to better reflect that, through Strength should be a close third option. Either way, those three attributes are the best way to emphasize a trained killer like Peacemaker.
