In X-Men: Unlimited Infinity Comic #7, two young mutants show how far they’ve fallen, going on rampage that could spell trouble for the X-Men.
Warning: The following contains spoilers for X-Men Unlimited Infinity Comic #7, available now on Marvel Unlimited.
Over the years, the X-Men have trained many young mutants to use their powers responsibly. Of course, some of these mutants have strayed from the straight and narrow path. In X-Men Unlimited Infinity Comic #7, by Gerry Duggan, Emilio Laiso, Rachelle Rosenberg and VC’s Joe Sabino, two young mutants, Nature Girl and Curse, demonstrate how they’ve passed the point of return by betraying the nobility of their teachings.
By the beginning of this issue, Nature Girl had already committed a couple of major crimes. Angered at the humans’ pollution and destruction of the planet, Nature Girl went on a rampage, killing a grocery store manager in Las Vegas. Nature Girl then proceeded to use parrots to attack the police and a bear to fend off her old teacher, Wolverine. By this point, Nature Girl’s crimes were severe enough for Wolverine to bring up the hole, Krakoa’s punishment for unruly mutants. Only Sabretooth had been placed in the hole before, indicating the severity of Nature Girl’s crimes. By X-Men: Unlimited Infinity Comic #7, however, Nature Girl has recruited Curse, another young mutant.
Together, these two take things to another level. Curse uses her powers brutally, causing an oil worker to slip and fall onto a rock, killing him. Nature Girl attacks the other workers with a swarm of bees, before using her antlers to slash one of the worker’s throats. These attacks are extremely violent, compounded by the sheer joy of their perpetrators. Nature Girl may not revel in the death of others, but she does say that she feels “alive” for the first time. The enjoyment which Nature Girl takes in her mission, one which involves murder and mayhem, is clearly a bad sign for her.
Curse may have gone down an even darker path, saying that the humans “don’t matter” and taking enjoyment in killing them. Curse also says she wants to be stuck in the hole, so that the curses inflicted upon her might stop. Such troubled language from these young mutants doesn’t pair well with their violent actions, showing how far they’ve fallen. With their pursuer, Wolverine, slowed down in another part of the country, who knows what other violent crimes Nature Girl and Curse might get up to in the meantime. Over the course of this issue, Nature Girl and Curse have demonstrated themselves to be clear and present dangers to the human race.
This chaotic duo has murdered several humans and assaulted many more, while targeting major human resources such as oil refineries. Moreover, the attacks on humanity have drawn quite a bit of attention. For one thing, Nature Girl began her attacks very publicly, in Las Vegas. Nature Girl and Curse then attacked a group of oil workers, with several human protestors present as witnesses. As Nature Girl and Curse head to the oil refinery, it seems that their targets are becoming even more high profile over time. With this in mind, it’s only a matter of time before this attack on humanity becomes public knowledge, if it isn’t already. This might put Krakoa in a difficult position.
Mutantkind’s leaders would have to do some serious work to cover up this violent attack on humanity, and to make peace with those who have been impacted by this rampage. At this point, it appears that sending Nature Girl and Curse into the hole wouldn’t be enough. The damage would be done, leaving humanity even more wary of Krakoa than they were already. This opens the door for anti-mutant organizations like Orchis, who would probably gain more allies from Nature Girl and Curse’s killing spree. In the future, it seems that mutants and Krakoa will have to keep a better eye on their young. Mutants like Nature Girl and Curse would, ideally, need to be educated and shown how to deal with humanity more peacefully.
