A major figure from the Avengers just gave the X-Men a major advantage that could radically change the future for mutant-kind.
WARNING: The following contains spoilers for X-Men: The Trial of Magneto #4, now on sale
The X-Men and the rest of Marvel’s mutants have effectively become more powerful than ever during the “Dawn of X” era, granting them the ability to come back from life following any demise thanks to the Five. While there have been weaknesses exposed in this plan — and hints about the future of Krakoa suggest it might not be a permanent upgrade — a major Avenger just found a way to amplify that perk.
The Scarlet Witch’s final spell in X-Men: The Trial of Magneto #4 by Leah Williams, Lucas Werneck, Edgar Delgado, and VC’s Clayton Cowles gives the X-Men and their mutant allies on Krakoa an enhanced resurrection queue — effectively making the mutant race more or less immortal.
After being resurrected and fully restored to life on Krakoa, the Scarlet Witch elects to remain on Krakoa to take care of some “unfinished business.” This turns out to be a spell conducted alongside Polaris, Proteus, and Legion — with the latter two reality warpers noting the presence of “the Eldritch Orchard.” This was a spell created in secret by Wanda’s death at her own hands as part of her secret plan to make peace with the mutant nation. With Scarlet Witch completing the spell and fully cementing her position as Magneto’s daughter (if not in blood then definitely in spirit), the group are able to create a pocket dimension from pieces of the past, present, and future — quickly dubbed the Waiting Room.
Cerebro can now access the Waiting Room and scan across time and space itself — finding mutants who were never backed up into the system or even had their X-Gene manifest before their deaths. From there, the Five can restore any mutant, meaning literally any mutant who has ever died is now capable of joining the resurrection queue. Operating on the Astral Plane, this reservoir cannot be targeted by non-mutants, meaning it lacks the weaknesses that the nominally destroyable Cerebro technology possesses. In effect, mutants can now revive anyone — starting with the most infamous mutant death of all, the original Thunderbird.
In essence, Scarlet Witch just found a way to make the mutant race truly immortal. While there are likely still ways to target the resurrection queues — killing mutants in Otherworld, disrupting Cerebro, or potentially killing the Five and halting resurrections until the Five could be resurrected by other means — this is a huge boon for the mutant nation. This will allow the countless mutants who have been killed over the years to come back to life, shoring up their numbers even more. This could be a big part of the recently teased futures of the mutant race, setting them up to effectively become the single most powerful group in the entire Marvel Universe. Indeed, mutants could overtake powerful alien races and empires and eventually succeed over humanity and artificial intelligence.
While there have been multiple hints that resurrection might be taken away from the mutant nation in the Second Age of Krakoa, it appears that might not be the case — and that resurrection might have just gotten a MASSIVE boost in potential. With the help of the Scarlet Witch, the X-Men can effectively restore themselves from any point in time and space, more or less truly making them immortal on a level that even they hadn’t previously reached. Despite her complicated history with the mutants, Scarlet Witch just found a way to make them more powerful than they’ve ever been.
