Kid Loki was just introduced into the MCU, and the version of the character from the comics was one of the Marvel’s best gods.
The Loki series from Disney+ has introduced a number of alternate versions of the God of Mischief to the MCU, and one of the most exciting of these is Kid Loki. This version of everyone’s favorite Trickster God doesn’t seem like much on the surface, but he is sure to be a powerful and important player in episodes to come if his comic book appearances are any indication.
First introduced in 2011’s Thor #617 by Matt Fraction and Pasqual Ferry, this particular Loki was found by the God of Thunder while conning tourists with card games on the streets. With no memory of his former self, the child had taken on the name Serrure, at least until he was given a glimpse of his former self by Thor. Loki had been reborn into this young form following his death at the hands of the Sentry, who had given in to the dark whispers of the Void and laid waste to all of Asgard. He had also managed to have his name scrubbed from Hel’s tome, ensuring that his death would not be his ultimate demise. At the urging of the spirit of his former self, Kid Loki vowed to take a more heroic path with the second chance he was given. Loki even had Thor by his side, which only further drove him to do something good with his new life, no matter the cost.
When Kid Loki finally got a chance to confront the spirit of his former self in Kieron Gillen and Doug Braithwaite’s Journey Into Mystery #622 in 2011, it came with a grave warning of the next threat to come. Knowing that the stakes were higher than ever, Kid Loki hatched a plan that could have gotten him killed. Loki visited both Hela and Mephisto, initially setting the two hellish rulers against each other until the threat of the Asgardian God of Fear made them set aside their differences and work together.
Despite his small stature, Loki proved capable of striking his own blow against the Serpent by literally rewriting the God of Fear’s history. This gave Thor a chance to strike down their ancient foe. Although he was still despised and distrusted by the very people he had helped to save, the All-Mothers saw good in Loki and decided to mentor the former God of Mischief as he turned his attention to the machinations of the various devils of the Marvel Universe.
Kid Loki’s time at the forefront of Journey Into Mystery would see him team up with the likes of Daimon Hellstrom and the New Mutants to defeat such threats as Nightmare and soul stealing Valkyries. While he never quite captured the hearts of those around him, he did manage to garner the respect of the people that grew to know him best during his time as an adolescent, including Thor.
No matter how many times Kid Loki seemingly betrayed those he had sworn to do right by, every heel turn would eventually be revealed as part of a larger plan to do something good. If the version of him on the silver screen is anything like the Kid Loki of the comics, then he could very well be the best influence that the MCU Loki could have possibly asked for.
