Producer Jason Blum says that the upcoming reboot of The Exorcist will be similar to director David Gordon Green’s 2018 sequel to Halloween.

Jason Blum, producer and president of Blumhouse Productions, recently said the upcoming reboot of The Exorcist will be similar to 2018’s Halloween.

“[It’s] going to be like [director David Gordon Green’s] Halloween sequel,” Blum said in an interview with Den of Geek. “I think it’s going to pleasantly surprise all the skeptics out there. We had a lot of skeptics about Halloween and David turned them around, and I think he’s going to turn it around with The Exorcist.”

He continued, “I love to do [these] kinds of movies because people are very emotional about it. I think it’s a high bar and it’s a challenge to do the movie. Remember, most of the audience coming to this — 95 percent of the audience who will, if we do our job right, come to see this movie — will not have seen the first Exorcist or even heard of it.”

Blum went on to explain that his goal for The Exorcist is to make a film that works for audiences familiar with the original and those that aren’t. “I want to make a movie for people that know and love the first Exorcist and are furious that we’re doing this, but somehow drag themselves to the theater. I want them to come out happy,” he said. “And I want to make a movie that people who’ve never heard of The Exorcist really enjoy. I think David did that with Halloween. I think he’ll do that with The Exorcist also.”

Blum and Green previously worked together on the 2018 Halloween sequel, which ignored years of franchise sequels and reboots. Instead, the film continued the story 40 years after the events that took place in John Carpenter’s original 1978 film of the same name, which saw Jamie Lee Curtis’ Laurie Strode in her first battle against Michael Myers. The 2018 film will Be getting its own sequel titled Halloween Kills, which is set to release in theaters Oct. 15, 2021.

Despite Blum revealing The Exorcist‘s similarities to his and Green’s Halloween reboot, not many details are known about the film’s plot or if it will connect in any way to prior films in the franchise. Similar to Halloween, The Exorcist has had its own underwhelming franchise following the original film, including 1977’s The Exorcist II, 2004’s Exorcist: The Beginning, and Dominion: Prequel to the Exorcist in 2005. There was also a short-lived spinoff series that aired on Foc between 2016 and 2017.

The Exorcist was originally directed by William Friedkin in ’77 and starred Linda Blair, Ellen Burstyn, Max von Sydow and Lee J. Cobb, telling the story of two priests expelling a demon from a 12-year-old girl. Rumors began circulating in 2020 that he was attached to a potential reboot, though Friedkin vehemently denied these rumors, saying, “There’s not enough money or motivation in the world to get me to do this.”
