The Infamous comic told the harrowing tale of Cole MacGrath’s escape from Empire City and the start of his journey to New Marais.
Infamous is a fan-favorite series of action-adventure platforming video games created by Sucker Punch Productions, who also made the popular games Sly Cooper and Ghost of Tsushima, and released exclusively on the Sony PlayStation. Both Infamous and Infamous 2 put the player in the acrobatic shoes of Cole MacGrath, a bike courier with electric superpowers. While the games are arguably one of the most interesting stories told on the PlayStation 3, Infamous ended with a few loose ends that were wrapped up by the Infamous comic written by Williams Harms, illustrated by Eric Nguyen and published by DC Comics.
At the end of the first game, Cole successfully defeated Kessler, an alternate future version of himself who came to the past to make sure his younger self was strong enough to defeat “The Beast,” a creature who killed Kessler’s family. The original game ends with Cole having no friends and being pursued by the government, while Infamous 2 starts with the MacGrath fighting a militia that has taken over the coastal city of New Marais and training to stop “The Beast.” The Infamous comic fills in the details between the two games and chronicles Cole’s escape from Empire City.
Infamous #1 reveals that Moya, a DARPA agent who periodically helped Cole, worked with Kessler to build the Ray Sphere, which was the device that caused MacGrath and other conduits to gain their powers. They also experimented on a security guard to augment his conduit powers. Cole also tells Zeke, his best friend, the truth about his relation to Kessler. While Moya is gathering an army to invade the city, a mutated and significantly more powerful David escapes his DARPA prison. He starts scouring the city for Cole because he can’t tell him apart from Kessler.
Cole wonders if he should turn himself in to Moya but before he can go through with it, David attacks him and nearly kills Zeke. The super powered duo fight until Cole is able to escape to Zeke’s apartment. While in the apartment, Cole has visions of Kessler and his former girlfriend Trish blaming him for her death, which are caused by Moya using hallucinogenic gas on him. Moya’s men capture Cole and take him to their floating command center on the USS George.
Two reporters sneak into the city and are led to an underground hospital by one of the survivors. Meanwhile, Cole is being interrogated by Moya, who believes that he can brainwash MacGrath into doing whatever the government wants. Sasha, one of the antagonists of the first game, senses Cole is on board the ship and escapes her prison to free him. At the same time, David attacks the ship, killing everyone in his path.
Once David reaches Cole, he almost kills him but Moya helps MacGrath by releasing several Military Conduits to save him. Sasha attacks Moya, but is killed. Zeke drags a bruised and battered Cole away from the fight, prompting MacGrath to reflect on how he’s been running from things his whole life. Resigning to never run away again, Cole uses his most powerful attack to kill David and destroy what’s left of the USS George. As the ship sinks, Moya falls into the water. Cole tries to save her, but she screams at him to leave before the water kills him too. He leaves and Moya drowns.
Two days later, reporters broadcast everything they saw inside Empire City on national news, showing Moya’s involvement with Kessler and Cole’s superpowers. At the docks, MacGrath and Zeke repair their previously strained relationship and Cole gets a call from Lucy Kuo, who says that they need to talk.
Using a comic to bridge the gap between Infamous and Infamous 2 was a perfect idea, largely because Infamous was originally inspired by comic books like DMZ and Batman: No Man’s Land. Additionally, the cutscenes in the game were designed to look like highly stylized comic book pages. The Infamous comic neatly wraps up the plotlines left unresolved at the end of the first game, while putting in motion the events that take place in Infamous 2. Eventually, Cole and Lucy meet, which prompts him to travel to New Marais in search of a way to stop “The Beast.”
