Hawkeye’s Christmas setting will be an integral part of the Disney+ series’ storyline, according to Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige.
Hawkeye is set to debut on Disney+ next week, and will be the first Christmas-themed offering from Marvel Studios on the streaming service. But studio chief Kevin Feige says the setting won’t just consist of Christmas trees and garland being displayed in the background — the holiday setting will add a different dimension to the series.
At a recent press conference, Feige observed 2013’s Iron Man 3 was a Christmas movie, albeit one released out-of-season, but Hawkeye is unique because of its holiday release schedule. “[Iron Man 3] came out in the summer,” Feige said. “This is fun because it is a Christmas story that is taking place during the holidays.”
While set during Christmastime, the holiday backdrop in Iron Man 3 was largely superficial and didn’t figure into the movie’s storyline.
“It also is based on early discussions about a limited time period, about setting a series in — not quite real time, but essentially in a six-day period,” Feige continued. “Six episodes, six days. Will Clint make it home for Christmas? Which was fun and a breath of fresh air after world-ending stakes and celestials bursting out of planets and multiverse shenanigans that this is — like, Hawkeye himself a grounded, family-based show.”
“I’ve always loved films or shows or specials that take place over the holiday season. I think there’s a heightened amount of emotion and a heightened amount of conflict and tension that can occur in this glorious season and have always, honestly, been looking for opportunities.”
In Hawkeye, Clint Barton, played by Jeremy Renner, faces past enemies in New York City while accompanied by Kate Bishop, played by Hailee Steinfeld. But the clock is ticking as Christmas approaches and Clint yearns to get back home to his family in time for the holiday.
Hawkeye isn’t the only upcoming holiday-themed offering from Marvel Studios on Disney+. “We’ve already announced a Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special, which has literally been in the works for four years,” Feige added. “This show has come up and now come out in that time. I thought the Guardians one would be our first. Obviously, they’re very different, but I just love this time of year for the storytelling possibilities.”
The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special is currently filming and set for release sometime next year. The first two episodes of Hawkeye premiere on Disney+ Nov. 24 — just in time for Thanksgiving.
