A CBR-exclusive clip from the physical release for Rick and Morty Season 5 reveals how the show’s writing team managed to get through the pandemic.

A new CBR-exclusive clip from the physical media release of Rick and Morty Season 5 reveals how the COVID-19 pandemic affected the show’s writers’ room.

In the clip, which comes from the “Fighting Gravity: The Making of Season 5 – Remote Writing” extra on Rick and Morty: The Complete Fifth Season, showrunner Scott Marder explains that work on the show was primarily done remotely during the pandemic. He said that he didn’t think a comedy writing room “could exist via Zoom.” He felt he was proven wrong, though he noted jokes that didn’t work “[landed] with a particular Zoom thud.”

Series co-creator Dan Harmon went on to say that the rooms weren’t really as fun to have, though they were more efficient. Writers Nick Rutherford and Siobhan Thomas agreed with Harmon’s assessment, saying things would get done faster during the pandemic. Thomas, for her part, said they worked between 10:30AM and 4:30PM, with a two hour lunch in between. After that, “you just have the rest of the day to think about your life. And that’s really the hard part. The thinking about your life alone in your apartment.”

Created by Justin Roiland and Dan Harmon, Rick and Morty is an animated TV series that airs on Adult Swim. The series, which started in 2013, follows mad scientist Rick Sanchez and his grandson, Morty Smith, on their journeys throughout space and the multiverse. Rick and Morty has a passionate following, and the series has been renewed for an unspecified number of seasons.

Rick and Morty Season 5 began airing on June 20. The season, which lasted for ten episodes, concluded on Sept. 5. Reviews for Rick and Morty Season 5 were quite positive, and the outing currently holds a 95 percent on Rotten Tomatoes among critics. However, the audience score on that platform is much lower, sitting at 52 percent.

First identified in 2019, the COVID-19 quickly swept across the globe, resulting in major shutdowns for many industries, including entertainment, resulting in a mass shift to remote work where possible. At the time of writing, more than five million people are estimated to have died as a result of contagious disease.

Rick and Morty: The Complete Fifth Season is available now on Blu-ray Steelbook, Blu-ray and DVD. At this time, no official release date for Rick and Morty Season 6 has been announced.
