Persona 4 Arena and its sequel Persona 4 Arena Ultimax aren’t mere cash-ins on the Persona namely, but instead actual sequels to the main series.
Ever since the series hit it big on the PlayStation 2, Atlus’ Persona franchise has gotten bigger than even diehard fans would have expected. This has resulted several sequels and spinoffs that deviate from the mainline series’ turn-based JRPG gameplay, including dungeon crawlers, dancing games and, perhaps most successful of all, fighting games.
Persona 4 Arena and its sequel Persona 4 Arena Ultimax aren’t mere cash-ins on the Persona name. Instead, they continue the story of Persona 4 and Persona 3, making them just as important to the overall lore as any other main series game. With Ultimax soon set to be re-released for modern consoles, here’s a look at what gamers should know about its plot.
How Persona 4 Arena Ultimax Connects to Persona 3
Persona 3 featured the Special Extracurricular Execution Squad, or SEES, who are joined by the protagonist, a new student (named Minato Arisato in the manga) who just moved to Tatsumi Port Island. They soon begin investigating events that could lead to the end of the world, though this apocalypse is staved off by a time loop that ends with Minato’s death.
Persona 4 Arena and Arena Ultimax take place three years later and includes some, but not all, of Persona 3‘s main cast. Most significantly, Minato is absent, though Arena does reveal that Igor’s Velvet Room assistance has departed to try and save him from his tragic fate. This makes it vital to go into Persona 4 Arena Ultimax with at least a basic knowledge of Persona 3‘s story.
How Persona 4 Arena Ultimax Connects to Persona 4
Persona 4 told the story of Yu Narukami, a transfer student spending a year in the small town of Inaba. The protagonist and his friends, eventually dubbed the Investigation Team, must enter a shadowy world inside of televisions to uncover the truth behind a series of murders. Upon completing the academic year, Yu returns home, leaving his friends behind. However, he visits them during Golden Week a few months later, leading to the events of the fighting games.
Persona 4 Arena is a crossover between Persona 3 and Persona 4, bringing both casts back for a new adventure that involves battling it out in a tournament in the TV World. Since Persona 4 gets top billing in the title, it’s no surprise that the games deal mostly with the mythology and events laid out in that game. The expanded storyline of Persona 4 Arena Ultimax, is set a day after the first game, keeping it in 2012 and only a little while after the events of Persona 4.
The game also introduces new characters and threats for S.E.E.S. and the Investigation Team to take on as they try to learn about and stop a dangerous Persona user. Persona 4 Arena Ultimax‘s port will also include the DLC released for the original, including “Episode Adachi,” which features the return of one of Persona 4‘s most important characters. Since the game picks up where the previous one left off, those who do not want to be spoiled should be sure to finish Persona 4 before playing Arena Ultimax.
