In a few key sequences, Spider-Man: No Way Home homaged some iconic Spidey memes, poking fun at how the internet loves the running gags.
WARNING: The following contains spoilers for Spider-Man: No Way Home, now playing in theaters.
In Spider-Man: No Way Home, the possibilities of Easter eggs and jokes were endless as the Marvel Cinematic Universe welcomed characters from the original Sony Spider-Verse. The latter did lead to a ton of memes being generated over the years, with fans once more following the trend with the MCU incarnation of the character, and make no mistake, No Way Home addressed a few of these iconic memes, poking fun at how the internet loves the running gags.
The Norman Osborn Scientist Meme
This stems from the first Raimi movie when Norman Osborn dropped Harry off at his field trip. He met Peter Parker on the stairs, and after commending him for being a science whiz, Norman said, “You know, I’m something of a scientist myself.” It allowed the guys to talk about Oscorp’s nanotech, fueling Harry’s jealousy over how Norman liked Peter more. This meme caught fire in recent years in light of some people choosing to generate their own theories in regard to real issues, as opposed to listening to trusted scientific data.
This got plugged in No Way Home after Tom Holland’s Peter caught the criminal incursions and put them in Doctor Strange’s lair. Peter didn’t want to send them back to their realities to die, so as he discussed a way forward with his team, Norman dropped the same line, wanting to use his brain to help. Seeing as Doc Ock was there too, he was confident they’d get the job done; although, it was uncertain if Peter could trust him. Either way, that smile he shot proved he knew how special the meme was.
The Spider-Men Pointing At Each Other
The original image was from the 1967 Spider-Man cartoon. In “Double Identity,” a villain attempted to impersonate Spider-Man, leading to the now-iconic moment where both characters saw each other for the first time. The meme template has evolved to show two or more similar parties meeting for the first time. It can also satirize both entities accusing each other of something when in reality both are guilty, and this meme has become popular across media.
This is homaged after Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield’s wall-crawlers came over and worked at Peter’s high-school lab to cure the villains. When Ned saw a laptop lighting up, indicating some experimental tech was ready, he called out for Holland’s Peter Parker. However, all the guys got confused as they had the same name. They started pointing at themselves and each other, as Ned took time to clarify which Spidey he was speaking about, leading to a hilarious exchange.
The Rent’s Due Meme
This came from the Raimi movies as well, where Peter’s landlord, Mr. Ditkovich, kept asking for rent. While his daughter, Ursula, was caring toward Peter, her dad was always abrasive. This meme eventually became hot for millennials as things like student loans and the rising cost of living made rental fees so exorbitant, making the bit all the more relatable.
This tribute isn’t as clear-cut or hilarious in No Way Home, but it did come when Holland’s Peter moved into his new apartment. The landlord made it clear off-screen that “rent’s due on the first,” highlighting the Ditkovich meme, but also making it clear Peter’s got a Herculean task at hand with no source of income given how his entire history, including education and connections to Stark Industries, were wiped away.
To see the iconic memes get honored, Spider-Man: No Way Home is in theaters now.
