Shazam! Fury of the Gods star Zachary Levi reveals how much time has passed between the 2019 DCEU film and the sequel.
Shazam!: Fury of the Gods star Zachary Levi discussed how much time has passed between the 2019 original and the forthcoming DC Extended Universe sequel.
“Okay, well, there is the kid in the adult, but how old is that kid and what is that kid’s backstory?” Levi said at DC FanDome China in an interview that also included director David F. Sandberg. “And you know with Billy Batson, he’s a foster child who was abandoned by his parents and, you know, he’s not just any kid, he’s a specific kid. And I think in the first [Billy] was 15 years old or something like that so, you know [I was] trying to be very specific about, well what is it to play a 15-year-old foster kid.”
Levi continued, “And then now, this one, he’s a few years older, he’s 17, and there’s a big difference in that, you know. In fact, you know, in those years, they’re very formative growth years. A 15-year-old kid is much different than a 17-year-old kid in some respects, so I just tried to evolve that as best I could, you know, as I stepped into this.”
Shazam!, adapted from the DC comic, stars Asher Angel as Billy Batson, a teen in Philadelphia on a quest to find his mother. The film is largely inspired by the New 52 reboot of the Golden Age saga of an orphan who gains the powers of six gods: Solomon, Hercules, Atlas, Zeus, Achilles and Mercury. Along the way, Batson joins a group home for other foster kids and becomes friends with Freddy Freeman (Jack Dylan Grazer), who provides guidance once Batson gains the powers of Shazam and figures out how to use them and his purpose. The new hero does battle with the villain Dr. Thaddeus Sivana (Mark Strong), who was denied the power of Shazam, spends his life seeking to recover that power and becomes a host for the Seven Deadly Sins.
Set two years after the events of the first film, Shazam! Fury of the Gods pits Billy Batson/Shazam against the daughters of Atlas: Hespera (Helen Mirren), Kalypso (Lucy Liu) and an unnamed character, played by Rachel Zegler.
Directed by David F. Sandberg, Shazam! Fury of the Gods arrives in theaters June 2, 2023.
