How Miles Morales Unlocked Spider-Man’s Best Superpower

[ad_1]

Miles Morales has just stepped into Peter Parker’s most important shoes, and in doing so he has unlocked his mantle’s most important power.

WARNING: The following contains major spoilers for Darkhawk #5

Connor Young’s life has spun into a whirlwind of unfathomable adventure ever since being imbued with the powers of Darkhawk. Being a teenage superhero has proven to be just as terrifying as it is incredible, although Connor hasn’t been on his own entirely. In fact, it is another teenage superhero who has been the biggest help of all, and in doing so Miles Morales has just inherited the greatest power any Spider-Man could ever wield.

Connor has been bouncing from one fight to another, the latest of which saw him up against his longtime friend turned techno-laden supervillain Shawn. While Connor was more than his old friend’s new powers could handle, it wasn’t Darkhawk who actually finished the fight. Instead, it was thanks to the timely intervention of Miles Morales that Shawn stayed down after being dealt a crushing blow. Of course, tying up loose villains wasn’t the only reason why Spider-Man decided to drop by in Darkhawk #5 by Kyle Higgins, Juanan Ramirez, Erick Arciniega, and VC’s Travis Lanham, but also for the all important purpose of making sure the titular knows he’ll always have a friend.

Miles Morales shares plenty of powers with his predecessor Peter Parker, yet it is the way the latter cultivated relationships that has always been his greatest strength. The fact that Peter’s own superhero career began so early on in his life, and that he has had so many heroic influences step into it over the years, have made him acutely aware of how much a good mentor truly matters. Not only has Peter had a plethora of his own, but he has made it a point to become one to each and every person that he can. Not just content with being a masked vigilante, Peter has taken on changing lives as a high school teacher at the very same school he graduated from (as well as another).

He has also made no small number of attempts to help various members of his rogues gallery reform themselves, from the  tragic case of Boomerang before the villain sacrificed himself to save Spider-Man in turn during Nick Spencer and Ed Brisson’s Sinister War #4. That Spider-Man could leave such an impact on others speaks to the heart of just how great the power that mantle carries really is. Now that Miles Morales has become something of a mentor to another young hero, he can finally say that he has followed in all of Peter Parker’s best footsteps.
