What If… Miles Morales writer Cody Ziglar explains how Miles’ Captain America differs from the Steve Rogers version.
Miles Morales’ tenure as Captain America has some crucial distinctions from his predecessor in What If…?, according writer Cody Ziglar.
In an exclusive interview with CBR, Ziglar opened up about turning Miles into Captain America and how the hero compares to Steve Rogers. The writer explained that one of the most significant differences between the two comes from how they acquired their powers. Since Steve trained as a soldier and volunteered to become a superhero, he had a firm grasp on his powers when he became Captain America. However, since Miles stumbled upon his powers by accident, he is less experienced in the role and has more to learn. Speaking on how Miles’ origin influences the upcoming story, Ziglar said, “While Miles understands the weight the name carries, he’s still figuring this stuff out as he goes. Also, he’s still a kid! He’s much more lighthearted in his approach to being a hero than Steve, but he still takes the job seriously.”
What If… Miles Morales puts a new spin on the Spider-Verse star by casting his variants as costumed crusaders reminiscent of other superheroes. For the book’s debut issue by Ziglar and artist Paco Medina, Miles becomes Captain America after gaining the powers granted by the super-soldier serum. Additionally, the story will reimagine Miles’ partner Starling in a costume reminiscent of the Falcon uniform worn by Sam Wilson.
Though Miles and Steve came across their powers in different ways, Ziglar believes that the two heroes share many qualities, such as their disdain for bullies. The writer described Steve as a “moral compass” who always points north and somebody who will sacrifice themselves for the greater good. These traits align with Ziglar’s understanding of Miles, which he says is consistent across realities. “Those are the foundational truths of his being. Even if you swap the radioactive spider for the Super-Soldier serum, those elements remain unchanged.”
As What If… Miles Morales introduces new incarnations of the titular hero, the original Miles will be revisiting his origins in his regular monthly series. Taurin Clarke’s cover for March’s Miles Morales: Spider-Man #36 shows the hero passing by the Ultimate Universe while adrift from space. The Ultimate Universe is the birthplace of Miles and housed many of his early adventures, though seemingly vanished in the wake of Secret Wars. However, that may be changing soon, as Miles and his clone, Shift, explore the Multiverse after encountering the Assessor.
Elsewhere, Marvel will be exploring the legacy of Steve Rogers in its new series Captain America: Sentinel of Liberty. The book begins in June and will be written by Collin Kelly and Jackson Lanzing and illustrated by Carmen Carnero. It follows Steve as he reflects on how his actions have shaped America and who he is without the shield. This title is part of a two-pronged revival of Captain America, alongside Captain America: Symbol of Truth by writer Tochi Onyebuchi and artist R.B. Silva, which centers on Sam Wilson.
Written by Cody Ziglar and illustrated by Paco Medina, What If… Miles Morales #1 goes on sale March 2 from Marvel Comics.
