Since last month’s Black Widow started off Phase Four of the MCU, it seems like Marvel Studios has been continually cranking out teasers for more and more of its forthcoming films, many of which would have already been in theaters if the pandemic hadn’t occurred.
Eternals, with its ensemble cast, mystery narrative, and epic scope, is one of the most anticipated, and Kit Harington has started releasing some details about the film and his Black Knight character in the customary tight-lipped Marvel fashion. He focused on the previously announced plot point that the film will do something unprecedented in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

“I’m a big fan of the MCU. So when they come knocking it’s very exciting,” Harington said. “The character, I won’t go into why he interests me, because it’s more than my life is worth to tell you. But what did interest me about that piece was that it as Chloe Zhao directing. I met her and spoke with her and was so impressed by her. The cast was sort of phenomenal and wide-ranging and diverse. It just looked like they were doing something really different with this movie. I can’t tell you much about it but we filmed it pre-pandemic. And it’s coming out finally, it was sort of frustrating that it got pushed back so much. But now I’ll be going on and doing some press for that soon and it’s really exciting.”
Eternals has a massive cast of characters, most of which are beings that have been around longer than the human race. The story spans centuries. And of course there’s Zhao, the reigning Best Director winner at the Academy Awards, who is known for very intimate films that don’t share much DNA with the movies of the MCU.
All signs are pointing toward Eternals being a unique outing for the MCU, and we don’t have much longer to wait to find out if that’s actually the case. Harington is part of a cast that includes Richard Madden, Gemma Chan, Angelina Jolie, Salma Hayek, Kumail Nanjiani, Lauren Ridloff, Brian Tyree Henry, Barry Keoghan, Ma Dong-seok, and Lia McHugh.
While there is currently very little information about Eternals, there is a lot of pressure on the film to provide some direction for Phase Four of the MCU, after Shang-Chi and the Loki TV series. As far back as a year and a half ago, we reported that one additional way Eternals would be unlike other prior MCU films would be that it was going to put LGBTQ+ politics right up front with actor Haaz Sleiman discussing his on-screen kiss with costar Brian Tyree Henry, saying that Marvel’s first LGBTQ smooch was emotional for everyone on set.
Also in contrast to Black Widow, Disney also says that Eternals will be a theatrical-only release, restoring the order of things following the simultaneous release of several post-pandemic films. While there are still some questions about how any potential increases in COVID cases might affect releases in September and October, it appears like Disney is betting that everything will be just fine in November for Eternals to hold its own on the big screen without the support of Disney+’s Premier Access.
