In Dark Ages #3, one of Marvel’s most powerful villains pays Iron Man a huge compliment that turns out to be more terrifying than flattering.
WARNING: The following contains major spoilers for Dark Ages #3, on sale now from Marvel Comics.
Marvel’s Dark Ages has introduced one of the most devastating alternate timelines ever seen in the Marvel Universe. Thankfully, Earth’s Mightiest Heroes and their allies have managed to overcome, even in these tough times, due in no small part to the genius of people like Tony Stark. Unfortunately, Iron Man has been kidnapped by the mutant Apocalypse, and in Dark Ages #3 (by Tom Taylor, Iban Coello, Brian Reber, and VC’s Joe Sabino), an unlikely villain expresses concern about Tony Stark’s disappearance, paying him the ultimate compliment in the process.
In the seven years since the Unmaker was defeated and the lights went out all across the globe, the remnants of humanity have come together to carry on through the darkness. Thanks to the superpowered heroes among the survivors, a new era of prosperity has been ushered in despite the relatively newfound hardships that have at this point become just another fact of life. While the likes of Jean Grey and T’Challa were instrumental in paving the way for life in this world, figures such as Tony Stark have been working tirelessly to keep things running smoothly, making his sudden kidnapping a serious source of concern for the heroes.
While the heroes gather to discuss Stark’s kidnapping, it is Doctor Doom who is most upset by the recent development. When Johnny Storm questions the villain’s motivations, Lunella Lafayette reminds him that there is nothing sentimental about Doom’s concerns, but he understands how dangerous it is to have a genius level inventor such as Stark at the behest of their greatest enemy. Tony isn’t just Iron Man, he is unquestionably the most prolific and proficient weapons maker that the world has ever known. From design to development to implementation, there is seemingly no problem that Tony Stark can’t solve with time.
As part of Apocalypse’s regime, there is no shortage of resources for Tony to work with, and with Zebediah Killgrave controlling him, there is no way for Tony to refuse building whatever Apocalypse wants. That being the case, the only thing in short supply is time itself, which Doom points out in the most dramatic (and annoying) way possible.
Doctor Doom has always been willing to work with whomever he believes could further his own interests best, even his enemies. Considering the threat posed by Tony Stark under Apocalypse’s control, it is no surprise that Doom has chosen to fight alongside his heroic rivals. Even still, seeing Doom drive the severity of Stark’s abduction home in such an incessant manner is a clear sign that he knows how dangerous Iron Man can be, not to mention how afraid he is of what Tony could do with no one holding him back.
Even if Doctor Doom has a hidden agenda (which would certainly not be out of character) he still sees the threat that Stark’s abduction represents, and appears to be genuinely concerned about retrieving the inventor.
Having someone as powerful as Doom on their side might make taking down Apocalypse less difficult for the heroes, but it also presents the very real possibility that they will eventually be stabbed in the back if they let down their guard around the powerful villain.
