How Marvel Can Still Fix the MCU’s Iron Fist

[ad_1]

The MCU’s Iron Fist is not well-liked. Marvel comics may have just given the MCU a good way to replace him.

There was a point in time where Netflix had the most exciting new content in the MCU. The first couple seasons of Daredevil and Jessica Jones, as well as a very successful season of The Punisher, became the biggest content on the platform from 2015-2017. That upward trajectory was abruptly halted by 2017’s Iron Fist. The show’s first season was widely panned by fans and critics alike. Now with Spider-Man: No Way Home and Hawkeye cameos of Daredevil and Kingpin, fans are hopeful that other characters will make their way into the MCU. The problem is what to do with Iron Fist. The simple solution is to just write him out and pretend that he never happened. But there are still many Iron Fist fans out there who want to see the character make it to the Avengers. A new Iron Fist’s appearance in the comics may just provide a way for the MCU to keep Iron Fist in.

The problem with Iron Fist on Netflix is what it did to Danny Rand as a character. In the comics, Rand consistently performs a balancing act between his cocky billionaire lifestyle and his disciplined training as a living weapon. It can make him seem similar to a character like Tony Stark, who also constantly battles his wealthy bravado and drive to save his fellow human. But where Tony deals in technology and all things modern, Iron Fist deals in spiritualism, mythology, and magic. At the end of the day, the Iron Fist is willing to sacrifice all things material to be a protector, and he has no need for those things as long as he has his powerful body. Netflix’s Iron Fist makes Danny Rand mopey and unsympathetic. It also rarely sees Danny ever actually using the iron fist, which almost makes the title of the show feel redundant. Iron Fist Season 2 as well as the Defenders mini-series do good work at making Danny more interesting and powerful, but the damage has been done.

Recently, Danny Rand in the comics gave up his abilities as the Iron Fist. In Iron Fist: Heart Of The Dragon (Larry Hama & David Wachter), Danny’s iron fist power is placed in a dragon’s egg so that power can be given to the next worthy person. It’s already known that this is leading up to the introduction of the first Asian Iron Fist which will be written by Alyssa Wong and launched this February. This presents an interesting opportunity to the MCU. If this new Iron Fist proves successful in the comics, fans would certainly be open to seeing him placed into the movies. This would also give an out for Danny Rand, who could potentially be written out in a similar way as his comics counterpart.

Danny’s fans may still be sad to see Danny Rand depart the MCU. He’s been a staple of Marvel’s heroes for decades and it’s tough to swallow the idea of his character being taken out of the MCU because of a couple of rough seasons of television. It’s the nature of Hollywood, though. They’re unlikely to continue pursuing an unsuccessful character when there are so many other characters, either already profitable or with the potential to be profitable, waiting for the spotlight.

The identity of this new Iron Fist is yet to be revealed. Hopefully, he’s a wonderful new addition to the Marvel comics. They could potentially be a great way for the Marvel Cinematic Universe to reintroduce Iron Fist. Regardless of who currently holds the power of the Iron Fist, fans just want to see that power brought to life on the big screen.
