In Hawkeye, Clint Barton and Kate Bishop utilize the bow in vastly different ways. But what are their styles, and how do they help the heroes grow?
Marvel Studios’ Hawkeye series gives audiences the chance to better explore the character of Clint Barton (Jeremy Renner). But aside from seeing how he has been coping since the loss of Black Widow and reunion with his family, fans can also see more amazing archery skills. However, rather than fly solo, he’s also teaming up with another archer named Kate Bishop (Hailie Steinfeld), who has her own unique set of archery skills. But even though both heroes are archers, they have key differences that help each other grow.
Fans have gotten a glimpse of Clint’s skills thanks to films like Avengers, but in Hawkeye, his talents reveal a unique trademark that isn’t copied by Kate or any other marksmen in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. That being said, Kate shows off how her archery skills give her a unique signature, and rather than try to upstage one another, they leave themselves open to change and evolve based on who they are as archers and who they can be as heroes.
Clint Is a More Tactical Archer
From his first appearance in Thor, Clint has always been a more traditional archer. From his stance to his creativity, Clint’s rooted in traditional archery motions that have defined who he is as a marksman. That said, even though his style is more tactical than Kate’s, Clint still manages to introduce his iconic trick arrows. But rather than using anything overly outrageous, as he did in the season finale of Hawkeye, Clint mostly utilizes more subdued trick arrows. Some examples include an arrow that fires small bullets from the shaft or one that doubles as a USB. Because he’s trained as a spy, Clint is never able to flex his creative side, and everything about how he operates is based on stealth and subtlety.
Kate Is a More Creative Archer
From the moment she’s introduced in Hawkeye, Kate takes all that has inspired her and gives it her own twist. As a result, her archery skills are more creative, from trick arrows to combat. For example, when she first shoots an arrow, she makes a trick arrow with a tennis ball to ring the clock tower bell at her school. She later encourages Clint to make more trick arrows and even get more creative by making arrows that freeze on contact or house a massive airbag. She’s also more adept at using her bow in combat. Whereas Clint is used to typical martial arts and treating his bow like a staff, Kate uses the arms of her bow as a spring to propel her up and forward for expert grapples and kicks. As an archer, Kate operates like a survivor and uses her precision even without an arrow by flicking one of the Kingpin’s (Vincent D’Onofrio) cufflinks, activating all of her trick arrows from a distance.
How Do These Styles Affect the Hawkeyes?
Although Kate is still new to being an archer and a hero, she and Clint both prove that there’s still room for them to learn. In terms of growth, Kate has helped Clint by having him embrace his creative side. In doing so, Clint’s arrows have more flair, and he’s able to show off more than he ever has. Before Hawkeye, he was an archer with a mission, and it never gave him any room to freestyle. But now, he can change his traditional bow skills into something classic but even more unpredictable.
As for Kate, Clint showed her more creative ways to be precise and use her skills with items that aren’t arrows. He helps nurture her desire to experiment with arrows, and in turn, she manages to find her voice as an archer who can quickly adapt to any situation and has enough awareness to hit her mark, even when moving at high speeds. With Clint and Kate’s adventures just beginning, it’ll be exciting to see how these two continue to grow as archers.
