WARNING: The following contains spoilers for How I Met Your Father, Season 1, Episode 3, “The Fixer,” now streaming on Hulu.
We start in the year 2050 once again, with older Sophie explaining this episode is the story of the time she helped someone fix their dating problems through the magic of photography. When the son tries to point out that the story has gotten away from her, Sophie responds that she gave birth to him, he can give her one night. Which, I guess, fair.
Back in 2022 it turns out the person Sophie is helping is Jesse. He wants to join Tinder, but all his photos are terrible. Well, want is a strong word. He probably feels he should – but he also feels it would go very, very badly if he did. He is, after all, internet famous as the Proposal Fail guy. Sophie, however, points out she’s gone out on 87 Tinder dates this year (88, Sid corrects) and she hasn’t given up on finding someone. So Jesse can’t give up before he even starts.
Sophie is going to help him create the perfect profile – and she’s also going to take the greatest profile picture. Except it’s not as easy as she thought, because Jesse is awkward with a capital A.
Meanwhile, Charlie cannot find an apartment. It doesn’t help that he doesn’t exactly have any money. Since Ellen is also looking for one, Sophie suggests she and Charlie can be roommates. But Ellen doesn’t want a roommate. Charlie reacts to this about as well as he reacts to anything, which is to say not that well. It all gets worse when he finds out that it’s not that Ellen doesn’t want a roommate, she doesn’t want him as her roommate.
Back at Pemberton’s, Sid gets a package from his fiancé. In order to spice their long-distance relationship up, Hannah sends him sex toy. Except Sid doesn’t do sex toys. He doesn’t even do toys. Valentina, however, is determined to help him. She talks to him about angles and convinces him to give it a try.
Jesse and Sophie are still trying to take pictures, and it’s not going well. At least not till Jesse stops posing and starts just talking to one of his students. That, however, is when the Vice Principal for the school he works in walks out, and he and Sophie agree about Jesse’s awkwardness. There are sparks. It’s a thing.
Later, Charlie outbids Ellen for the apartment she wants, and Sophie and Jesse have moved onto going to real bars so he can meet people. Sophie turns out to be a decent wingman as Jesse hits it up with a girl. Meanwhile, Sid and Hannah are trying out their toys – but instead they end up having a conversation about how much long-distance sucks.
At the bar, Sophie realizes that the girl that had seemingly hit it up with Jesse is just doing to be able to tell her friends that Proposal Fail guy is hitting on her. She confronts her, and ends up spiraling about how she, herself, doesn’t really believe love is out there anymore. The girl obviously wants nothing to do with Jesse after that outburst.
Sid confides in Valentina about how much he misses Hannah, while Jesse and Sophie have a heart-to-heart in the subway. Sophie confides in Jesse about her childhood, about being alone with her mother and bouncing around from the house of one boyfriend to the next one, all while being the one taking care of her mother. Fixer is her go-to mode, she tells him. Especially when she can’t fix things for herself.
Jesse cheers her up by making her repeat the phrase she’d been trying to get him to repeat all day. “Today is the first chapter of my next great love story.” Subtle this show is not.
Back to Charlie and Ellen, they end up meeting at Pemberton’s because things didn’t exactly work out for Charlie and the apartment he wanted. Long story short, he got robbed. And Ellen got her identity stolen by her Craigslist roommate. So, perhaps, they decide, they are better off together.
The episode ends with Sid at Hannah’s – Valentina helped – Sophie realizing she did get some good shots of Jesse. She sends him the best one, for when he’s ready to try. He sends her the contact of the Vice Principal, for when she is. And twist …he was, apparently, at Sid and Hannah’s engagement party, which means he isn’t just any other random guy.
He could be The Father.
