With How I Met Your Father finally out, eagle eyed HIMYM fans are looking for connections. However, the best one has already been revealed.
WARNING: The following contains spoilers for the first episode of How I Met Your Father, “Pilot,” now streaming on Hulu.
How I Met Your Father premiered its first two episodes on January 18th, giving audiences the long awaited sequel series to the much beloved How I Met Your Mother. With the series now in progress, eagle eyed HIMYM fans are on the hunt to find any sort of connection between the original series and this one. It has been confirmed that both shows take place within the same universe, but the likelihood of seeing the gang is low, as everyone is on separate paths at this time. However, two particulalr things have been brought over.
The first of these is Apartment 4C, the place where Marshall, Lily, Ted, Robin and Barney spent the best moments of their nine years together. As the pilot episode of How I Met Your Father came to an end, it was revealed that the beloved apartment is now in the hands of Sid, who mentions he got it for a great price from an “old married couple.” While it is great to see the old place again after all these years, there is another important aspect that carried over: the director.
Casual fans of How I Met Your Mother might not have noticed that almost every single episode had the same director From the pilot to the finale, the “directed by” tag was followed with: Pamela Fryman. As of the first two episodes of How I Met Your Father, this is still the case. Fryman will also be returning as an executive producer along with Carter Bates and Craig Thomas, the creators of the original series.
Fryman got her first directing job on the 1990 series Santa Barbra which would catapult her into sitcom greatness. She would go on to direct episodes of Friends, The King of Queens, Fraiser, Just Shoot Me!, Two and a Half Men and dozens upon dozens of other shows. With Fryman returning to the world, How I Met Your Mother fans should be excited to get the same feeling as the original, with a uniquely different outlook. And with apartment 4C coming back, Fryman’s expertise with the set will surely mean some new stories told in the familiar space.
The beauty of having a singular director for a sitcom, or any TV series, is that they already know how to work with the actors on set and know the specific language of the show. Fryman’s work on HIMYM helped solidify the series in pop culture in a way no one could have predicted. She perfectly incapsulated the mix of comedy and tragedy that made the show a household name and kept bringing viewers back week after week, year after year. Her return to the sequel series is comforting for HIMYM fans, as they know Fryman will do her best to bring the same love from the original into the sequel.
With a stellar start to far, fingers as crossed that Fryman can recapture the beauty the original brought. The first two episodes of How I Met Your Father are now available to stream only on Hulu.
