The Fantastic Four’s Human Torch is one of Marvel’s hottest heroes, and flames burn hotter than the surface of the Sun at their most powerful.
Despite his perpetual immaturity, the Human Torch is one of the Marvel Universe’s most powerful heroes. He may be deemed the least intimidating of the Fantastic Four in the eyes of villains like Doctor Doom, but Johnny Storm is in no pushover.
Aside from his impressive versatility in wielding the flames that wrap his body, Johnny is capable of unleashing a sort of ultimate attack in the form of his “nova-burst” a massive release of all the stored energy within his body that devastates the surrounding area, making his strongest attacks as hot as the surface of the Sun.
When his baseline powers are active, the Human Torch is wrapped in a low-intensity flame of low-level plasma, he burns at about 780 degrees Fahrenheit. His nova flame however, is the uppermost limit of his abilities. They are his highest and hottest levels of plasma that are used to create the nova-burst. As stated when Johnny used his Nova Flame powers in 1998’s Fantastic Four #11, by Chris Claremont and Salvador Larroca, this flame has the heat of a nuclear bomb blast at its hottest, which far exceeds the sun in some regards.
During Johnny Storm’s last stand against Annihilus and the Annihilation Wave in 2011’s Fantastic Four #587, by Jonathan Hickman and Steve Epting, where the attack wiped out many members of the endless army.
Since the surface of the Sun burns at roughly 10,000 degrees Fahrenheit, Johnny’s ultimate attack actually burns hotter than the Sun’s surface. However, the center of the sun burns at a heat of 27,000,000 Fahrenheit however, so Johnny’s hottest flames don’t even reach a fraction of the sun’s heat, despite their effectiveness. Compared to the immense heat of a true supernova, Johnny’s most intense attack is little more than a fireworks display, dangerous if flashy and quick.
However, the Human Torch may not have truly pushed his powers past their limit. Johnny himself admitted that if he truly unleashed the full extent of his nova-burst he could destroy a small moon.
Like the other members of the Fantastic Four, the Human Torch’s power has only grown since the team’s fateful space flight. While his flames were once enough to merely burn down a campus, they’re not hot enough to take on an army. While the Human Torch may not actually burn as hot as the Sun or a real supernova, the fact that those are the points of comparison that must be used is a testament to just how hot Johnny can be. While the Marvel Universe is full of flame-wilding heroes, none of them burns quite as brightly as the Human Torch.
