How God’s Arrival Changed the Meaning of Lucifer for Tom Ellis

In an interview with CBR, Lucifer series star Tom Ellis shares how God’s arrival changed his outlook on the show and his devilish character.

SPOILER WARNING: This article contains spoilers for Lucifer Season 6, now streaming on Netflix.

In Season 5 of Lucifer, Dear Old Dad (Dennis Haysbert) finally paid a visit to his Celestial sons on Earth. His visit brought with it a lot of pain for the Devil, and, also, some catharsis.

In an exclusive interview with CBR, series star Tom Ellis shared how God coming down to the mortal plane changed his view of what Lucifer could be and how his character could grow.

“When we brought Dennis [Haysbert] into the show in Season 5, I never thought we’d meet Dad when we first started the show,” Ellis shared. “So, when we did meet Dad, and he leaves us with this conundrum of, ‘You’ll figure it out,’ I was like, ‘What does that mean?'”

Ultimately, the meaning of God’s cryptic message to Lucifer played out in the Netflix series’ final season. Although Lucifer has, technically, won the divine mantle fair and square, he seems reluctant to claim it and spends most of the series’ final episodes finding ways to avoid acknowledging this truth. “Knowing that Lucifer had sort of thought he had figured it out, and then realized that being God wasn’t his calling, the chips started falling into place,” the star who has played the devilish detective sidekick for all six seasons of the hit show added. “There was a payoff to the ‘You’ll figure it out.'”

The payoff that Ellis alluded to was Lucifer realizing that he actually belongs in Hell — but Hell needs to be totally rebuilt from the ground up. However, this choice did mean that Chloe would have to live on Earth, raising his daughter Rory, without him by her side. Additionally, this led Chloe to decide to come out of retirement and reinvest her time in fixing the corruption within the L.A.P.D.

In a later interview, Ellis reflected on the cost of his character’s decision to return to Hell. “I think that to have that sacrifice made at the end, to understand that sacrifice, for Rory and Lucifer to truly understand why they didn’t spend their lives together, was the most important thing<” Ellis added. “Because once they understood that, they could accept it and then that made everything else fall into place.”

All six seasons of Lucifer are streaming now on Netflix.
