Developer Firaxis Games pulls back the curtain on Midnight Suns, discussing how Marvel HeroClix figures helped the studio conceive the tactical RPG.
When it came to conceiving Marvel’s Midnight Suns, the latest tactical RPG from XCOM developer Firaxis Games, the studio recently shared how physical HeroClix figures helped lay the groundwork for the upcoming video game.
In discussing the long road of getting a new game off the ground during this year’s Gamescom, Firaxis pulled back the curtain on the early stages of Midnight Suns‘ development, telling CBR, “We actually started with, like, HeroClix figures. We actually made a physical version of the game first. We just lay down a map, had these HeroClix figures and we just tried to figure out how to come up with a new tactical ruleset.”
“It needed to be fun,” the developer continued, “it needed to be deep, you have to have all of these choices and at the same time you have to feel like this person is the coolest person on the map at all times. It took a long time to get where we ended up.”
HeroClix are collectible figures based on characters from various franchises such as Marvel and DC. The figures, which come in multiple rarities, can also be played as part of a tabletop game, as each miniature comes with its own corresponding character card and in-game statistics.
Announced as part of the Gamescom opening night lineup in a cinematic reveal trailer, Midnight Suns sees Hydra reviving Lilith, Mother of Demons, who spreads her destructive demonic armies across the world. Standing in her way, however, are a cast of iconic playable superheroes — including the likes of Captain America, Iron Man, Wolverine, Captain Marvel, Ghost Rider and plenty of others alongside an original character called the Hunter.
Based on the Midnight Sons comic series, Firaxis also recently discussed the name change from “Sons” to “Suns,” saying, “The change in name highlights the fact that this is not a retelling of the original story and that it offers a completely new unforgettable adventure.”
Marvel’s Midnight Suns launches for PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch and PC in March 2022.
