Marvel Studios might have set up their rumored film adaptation of the legendary Secret Wars storyline with the ending of Eternals.
There have been reports of Marvel Studios planning to adapt the iconic Secret Wars storyline into their next big crossover film. Though it is unclear how the studio intends to set up this cosmic battle, the ending of Chloé Zhao’s Eternals might have already planted the seeds for the Secret Wars to take place in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
Eternals ended with the Celestial Arishem appearing over Earth and taking Sersi, Phastos and Kingo away after their team prevented the world-ending emergence of Tiamut. He claimed that he would spare the Earth, but he would analyze these Eternals’ memories to determine whether or not humanity is worthy of living. Though it seems like their memories will be the final verdict on Earth’s judgment, it could still lead to one more test in the form of the MCU’s Secret Wars.
In the Secret Wars storyline, an all-powerful being known as the Beyonder transported a handful of Earth’s superpowered heroes and villains to a planet called Battleworld. There, the Beyonder had both sides face each other, promising the victor with anything their heart desired. Though this would no doubt be one of the MCU’s biggest films to date, the studio could take some liberties with the source material so it will fit with the end of Eternals.
Based on the Eternals’ memories, Arishem could see how Earth is filled with both good and bad people and end up having people from both sides battle to see which is superior, with the outcome determining the fate of Earth. The Celestial could end up taking the Beyonder’s place in the film or working with the Beyonder from behind the scenes. However, he could promise the winners anything they want while keeping his true intentions secret so they will all take part in the contest.
It already looks like the MCU will introduce characters from the original Secret Wars to appear in the film, including the Fantastic Four, the X-Men, a black-suited Spider-Man, Kang the Conqueror and Doctor Doom. Based on the post-credits scene of Eternals, Kit Harington’s Black Knight and Mahershala Ali’s Blade could end up taking part in the contest in the former’s effort to rescue Sersi.
All in all, the ending to Eternals looks like it will set up another massive conflict for Earth’s Mightiest Heroes, but whether or not this will directly lead to a Secret Wars film remains to be seen. But with an all-but-inevitable crossover event following the success of Avengers: Endgame, it wouldn’t be a surprise if Zhao’s film had set the stage for this cosmic war to take place.
