How Doomed: Demons of the Nether Turns Minecraft Into DOOM

[ad_1]

You can play DOOM on anything, but one fan has taken that to another level with a genuinely impressive DOOM-inspired Minecraft conversion.

As far as video game success stories go, few properties have seen as much critical and commercial accomplishment as Minecraft and DOOM. Minecraft is one of the best-selling games of all time, and the iconic DOOM series has not only enjoyed success through the incredibly well-received Bethesda published reboots in the past few years but has been ported to nearly every electronic device in the world. With the continued interest in these two beloved games and each individual game’s proliferation of player-created mods, it was only a matter of time before someone mashed the two together.

Now that meshing of the two franchises has finally happened with a new free mod recently released to Minecraft‘s Java Edition. This mod, entitled Doomed: Demons of the Nether, is not just a simple re-skin of the game’s beloved blocky characters but a lovingly built recreation of the gory action of DOOM (2016), seen through the lens of Minecraft‘s iconic visual style. Now that DOOM can run on graphing calculators and refrigerators, it only seems fitting that its next step is to be mashed into the brilliant survival gameplay of Minecraft in a detailed and fun way.

Demons of the Nether was created by a singular developer known as Sibogy who documented the yearlong process through his YouTube channel. On the channel, Sibogy takes ample time to explain his design ideals and showcase just how he translated the frenetic action of DOOM (2016) into the Minecraft world. Players can watch the whole process, and follow along not just with his design process, but all the myriad of details he added over time.

Speaking of detail, Demons of the Nether is chock full of fan service and recreations of the incredible combat mechanics that DOOM (2016) offered. The game features reimaginings of Cacodemons, Revenants, Pinky Demons and plenty of zombified marines complete with firearms that rush the player in groups. Sibogy also lovingly recreated the game’s Martian locales including the massive research facility complete with demonic portals and all matter of DOOM-style decorations like giant skulls and hellish accouterments. Even the weapons are pitch-perfect recreations of those found in the original game, as players can wield the Super Shotgun, Plasma Rifle, Combat Shotgun and even the BFG-9000 in all its glory.

As for the gameplay, Demons of the Nether comes as close as it can get to completely recreating the DOOM experience. Combat is fast and responsive, and players can employ many of the mechanics that the reboot introduced to the series as well. Enemies can be cut to ribbons with the chainsaw to collect vital ammo, players can pick up armor shards to protect the blocky Doom Guy player character and as always, quick weapon switching is smooth and effective as players glide along dispatching demons. Players can even throw grenades into the snarling but cute jaws of the blocky Cacodemons, causing them to swallow the explosives just like in DOOM (2016) for another added bit of attention to detail.

The mod itself which is a map and resources pack can be pretty easily installed by following the directions on the dedicated website. Here players can download everything needed to run it in Minecraft Java Edition. From there it’s simply a descent into blocky hellscapes full of equally terrifying and adorable monsters and demons intent on taking out the equally cute green armor-clad Doom Guy.

DOOM continues its domination of every possible gaming opportunity by invading Minecraft with this great new free experience and further proves that few things are as fun as speedily blowing apart demons as a methodical killing machine whose rage is his most useful feature. If fans tire of endlessly debating which DOOM reboot is better and need to blow off some steam, Demons of the Nether is available now for some wholesome demon-slaying action.
