WARNING: The following contains major spoilers for Season 4 of Cobra Kai, streaming now on Netflix.
Season 4 of Netflix’s Cobra Kai was a cruel lesson for Daniel LaRusso’s (Ralph Macchio) Miyagi-Do and Johnny Lawrence’s (William Zabka) Eagle Fang as they didn’t foresee how strong John Kreese and Terry Silver’s sinister Cobra Kai would have become. It led to the latter winning the All-Valley tournament overall on points, but while it seemed like the heroes lost, there were key threads left hanging to set up an enticing fifth season.
Daniel And Chozen Have To Evolve Miyagi-Do
Daniel’s Hawk/Eli won the men’s championship, but the deal was that once Cobra Kai took the team trophy, Miyagi-Do would cease. Daniel wasn’t going to do this, though, instead recruiting Chozen, his nemesis from The Karate Kid III, to help him. Season 5 can look at Chozen using Miyagi’s secret techniques from Japan, as well as other philosophies from the Eastern hemisphere, to make Daniel’s squad better.
Chozen did redeem himself in Season 3 and seems to be kinder, but it’ll be interesting to see if he and Daniel can co-exist as teachers. It may craft a competitive dynamic, especially as they both vied for Kumiko’s heart back in the day. That said, Chozen may have the solution for blending offense and defense which Daniel desperately craves as he can tell his methods are outdated.
The LaRusso Kids Have To Improve
Daniel’s daughter, Sam, lost the women’s championship to Tory, but she came a long way, pushing Tory to the limit. She’s shown a lot of promise, but still, she doesn’t want to stick to Miyagi-Do’s tactics alone, as Johnny’s Eagle Fang aggression helped her in her title ambitions. Thus, whether it be Chozen or Johnny, or maybe even Hilary Swank’s Julie from the fourth movie, Sam will need new mentors to shake it up as she has hinted that she’s run her course with Daniel. This may influence whether Sam also wants to make amends with Miguel, as it feels like she alienated him by not processing her rage properly.
In addition, Anthony may finally seek Daniel’s training out as the son was beaten by young Cobra Kai upstart, Kenny. Anthony deserved it for bullying Kenny so much, but he did have a change of heart and tried to be Kenny’s friend at the end. It’ll be interesting seeing how Anthony receives tutelage, though, as Daniel thinks he’s lazy and a spoiled brat, but if Sam bows out, Daniel may get to focus more on his son.
Terry Silver’s Cobra Kai Will Get Stronger
Terry got rid of Kreese in a surprise move in the finale as he wants to keep his crew as violent as can be, which isn’t good news for LA as he’s expanding the franchise to dojos all over the city. Thus, he could use the villain from the third film, Barnes, or other army buddies to create a more militant movement and ensure his brand becomes immortal.
His current charges will love this as they have a penchant for being bullies with egos, which will see Terry surely going into overdrive, especially as he has the money for it. He hated how Kreese was all about mercy and fighting fair now, so Terry is looking like he’ll be concocting even more sinister plans, made even worse by the fact he’s bribing officials to win competitions.
Robby and Tory Need To Find Their Path
Robby reconciled with Johnny at the end of the season as he stopped blaming his dad for his anger problems. As a result, Season 5 can see him training with Johnny or possibly returning to Daniel if he’s to regain his discipline and passion for the art. More so, he will be trying to save Kenny as he hated how his apprentice started loving the dark side of karate.
As for Tory, she saw Terry paying off a ref, so she realized she didn’t beat Sam fair and square. She’s poised to have a crisis of conscience because apart from trying to improve, she’ll want to repay Amanda (Daniel’s wife) for helping her go to therapy. All this could see Tory garner redemption and put the rivalry with Sam to bed, but if she or Robby make the wrong choice, their romance may also take a massive hit. Both want to be good, so it remains to be seen if their love can withstand all the drama.
Johnny Has To Save Miguel
Miguel got fed up of Johnny’s desire to win at all costs and left for Mexico City to find his dad. The thing is, the man doesn’t know about Miguel, so Johnny’s going after him to save the teen from possible heartbreak. This could make their relationship stronger, or damage it if the man actually becomes someone Miguel likes as a role model. It could test Carmen’s feelings for Johnny too, while als o hampering Johnny’s quest to help Robby as Robby needs more attention from his dad.
Apart from not being there for Robby, Eagle Fang might suffer as well, because apart from Miguel’s disillusionment with karate, there are other talents such as Devon who were looking to Johnny to make them better. Miyagi-Do could absorb them but Cobra Kai may be willing to poach too to spit in the heroes’ faces.
Stingray’s Truth Can Save Kreese
Terry beat Stingray down and had him lie about it being Kreese, which got Kreese carted off to prison. Thus, Season 5 will have Stingray torn about keeping up the lie. Sure, he just wants to be accepted, but he’s not a bad guy, which can see his conscience eating at him, especially if Kreese’s sentencing is harsh.
This may also pave the way for Kreese to get out and redeem himself. He finally regrets what he did to a young Johnny so they could heal their relationship and allow Johnny to work through his own daddy issues, as well as ones with the kids looking up to him as fathers now. Ultimately, Stingray’s decision can also lead to Kreese patching things with Daniel at last, as he’s realized Terry is a poison that needs removing.
Cobra Kai’s four seasons are available to stream now on Netflix.
