The X-Men have gained a major advantage thanks to their unique place in the world — and it could even help the other heroes in Devil’s Reign.

Some of the most interesting elements of the current X-Men era have centered around the political twists and turns that come with nation-building. While it has at times complicated their global mission and outreach, the X-Men just used it to gain a major edge over their New York-centric foes.
The X-Men have officially gotten the United Nations to recognize their right to have a base in New York City in Devil’s Reign: X-Men #1. On top of being a huge perk for the mutant heroes, it could end up becoming a landmark location for the rest of Marvel’s heroes during the event as well.

The X-Men have become increasingly recognized on a global level lately, especially with the additional perks and powers afforded to them due to Krakoa. The mutant nation has even gained formal recognition from the United Nations, with Hellfire Club veteran Harry Leland serving as Krakoa Ambassador. A major advantage to that status also gives the X-Men a major perk in the form of some diplomatic immunity. The “Devil’s Reign” crossover event has seen the Marvel heroes targeted by Kingpin’s machinations, attempting to outlaw all heroes. Most heroes are currently on the run or in hiding. Some, like Mister Fantastic, Invisible Woman, Spider-Man, and Iron Fist have all been captured.
But the X-Men have remained openly defiant of the law, remaining at their base in Seneca Park. Although the X-Men refuse to openly engage the Thunderbolts in combat, Kingpin sees the advantage of sending in the team. A battle between the mutants and “law enforcement” would hep Kingpin sell the public on his orders. However, Fisk’s city orders are outweighed by the United Nations officially recognizing the Treehouse as the consulate for Krakoa. It’s effectively made into the X-Men’s embassy in New York, giving them the ability to force Fisk’s soldiers to retreat. It’s one place in New York he can’t completely control, and one protected by the full weight of the United Nations AND a host of mutant heroes.

It’s a major advantage for the X-Men, potentially even shielding Emma Frost from prosecution over secrets Fisk has over her. But it could also prove to be a very useful tool for the rest of the hero community as well. It’s possible that the X-Men could invite other allies to the Treehouse, giving them sanctuary from other nations (including the United States). Cyclops used a similar tactic during the Outlawed event, helping ensure the Champions remained free from C.R.A.D.L.E. soldiers. This could provide the Avengers, Fantastic Four, and other heroes an open location to rally around. It could also shore up the X-Men’s alliances with other heroes, helping ease tensions within the hero community regarding the mutant’s recent moves.
Considering the teased upcoming conflicts between the X-Men, Avengers, and Eternals, reaffirming those bonds during Devil’s Reign might come in handy during that fight. The Treehouse’s connection with New York would help provide a platform for someone like Luke Cage to voice his opposition to Fisk. Having an embassy in New York has been a useful tool for villains like Doctor Doom, giving them the autonomy they need for their plans. The X-Men and the heroes might now have their own version of that and could provide serious help to the greater hero community going forward.
