As House of Slaughter begins, it reveals the first kill of Something Is Killing the Children’s Aaron and explains why it’s absolutely heartbreaking.
WARNING: The following contains spoilers for House of Slaughter #1, on sale now from BOOM! Studios.
As the first issue of House of Slaughter unfolds, it fills in the story of a key protagonist from Something is Killing the Children, the hunter known as Aaron Slaughter. He initially went to Archer’s Peak to stop his sister Erica, kill the series’ monsters and help wipe the town out, but he soon realized he needed to aid his ‘sister.’ However, this deep dive into Aaron’s past reveals just how tough his own journey was, as he details his most heartbreaking kill.
Aaron didn’t endure the best fate alongside Erica, someone he trained alongside for years at the Chicago society under the Order of St. George, the society that turns the young survivors of monster attacks into hardened monster hunters. He died fighting off the Oscuratypes, which troubled Erica off because he meant the world to her.
Now, this prequel by James Tynion IV, Tate Brombal, Chris Shehan, Andworld Design and Miguel Muerto reveals how Aaron became one of the franchise’s trusted agents who was sent to clean up drama, long before he started interacting with her. Fifteen years ago, he was found bumbling his training, fighting as a rare Black Mask against the White Masks. This led to a deep rivalry as he was bullied by Cecilia’s charges, with his ‘mother’ Jessica making it clear he needed to stay focused as he was meant for great things.
That’s where Jace comes in. He was a hunter and White Mask from the New Orleans Butcher House with quite a reputation. Jace rooms with Aaron, who’s pissed as he thinks this is punishment. However, he shows him the ropes, eventually bonding as they realize they’re not as bad as the other thinks. It comes to a head at the Dragon’s Keep, where Jace invites Aaron to spy in on their seniors, listening to key intel about the wars to come.
Unfortunately, the White Masks approach and try to ambush them, only for Jace to defend Aaron and make it clear no harm will come to him. It’s an endearing moment as Aaron’s felt alone his whole life, but what really shakes the book up is the time-jump where Aaron’s hunting someone before his Archer’s Peak trip.
It’s revealed this is none other than Jace, a kill he needs to enact to convince his superiors he’s worth the effort. Aaron confirms Jace is the first man he ever loved, which makes everything about this situation even more painful. However, this does raise the question of how precisely they fell in love and what broken rules resulted in the need to murder him.
As the Last Butcher and someone with a sketchy past and a secret vendetta against the Chicago arm of the organization, only time will tell how Aaron solves this and puts these dire matters of the heart to rest.
