Cody Rhodes had fans thinking of The Boys’ Homelander when he showed up at the AEW Dynamite: Grand Slam dressed in a new patriotic costume.
Homelander was trending on social media on Wednesday night after Cody Rhodes arrived at AEW Dynamite: Grand Slam sporting a brand-new patriotic costume that fans thought looked like the villainous patriotic-themed character from Amazon’s The Boys TV series.
Rhodes, a former World Wrestling Entertainment star (where he was known as Stardust), was a founding wrestler in All Elite Wrestling (AEW), where he also serves as an Executive Vic President. Rhodes had not wrestled since August 4th, when he had suffered a lopsided loss against Malaki Black that included Rhodes teasing that he would perhaps be retired from wrestling, but then Black attacked him with a crutch while Rhodes was seemingly signaling retirement. So instead, Rhodes had a rematch against Black at Grand Slam. Rhodes arrived with his wife, Brandi Rhodes, and his manager, Arn Anderson, in a brand-new costume to go with his “American Nightmare” motif.
Recently, Rhodes was discussing the different way that fans treat him now that he is, in effect, management, as fans are quick to assume that he books himself for matches or perhaps gives himself “undeserved” wins, which was a fear at Grand Slam with Rhodes paired again against Black.
At the same time, though, Rhodes has explained that despite the somewhat negative reaction he now receives as a wrestler, he would not be turning heel, explaining recently, “To go from a warm reception to an adversarial reception…I’ll retire before I become a heel. I’m not going to make decisions that are bad for our youth to see. That’s the challenge, how do I maintain where I’m at when the crowd wants to get a different flavor.”
This is why Rhodes seemingly embracing a Homelander motif made some fans wonder whether this was, in fact, setting Rhodes up to become a heel. As one fan noted, “Does Cody Rhodes realize that The Homelander was the BAD GUY?” However, another fan noted, “Cody said he would never turn heel. I imagine Homelander doesn’t view himself as a villain either. And if Cody’s Homelander inspired gear gives us a hint this is the direction we’re heading, it could be a brilliant move for Cody’s character going forward.”
However, other fans suggested that Rhodes might not be going for a Homelander look at all, as some felt that he looked more like Evil Knievel…
And some even compared it to some of Vanilla Ice’s costumes over the years.
Whether Rhodes embraces a Homelander vibe in his future appearances will likely make things clearer as to what, exactly, his new costume means.
