Henry Cavill’s Biggest Man of Steel Regret Is Sure to Make You Smile

[ad_1]

Superman actor Henry Cavill reveals that he regrets one silly face he made while filming Zack Snyder’s 2013 film, Man of Steel.

Even Superman had issues with his smile in Man of Steel.

For his turn as Superman in 2013’s Man of Steel, star Henry Cavill knew he was stepping into some big red boots. Recognizing that Cavill could never compare to Christopher Reeves’ Superman in the 1978 film, director Zack Snyder’s vision presented a decidedly darker depiction of the character. The movie proved to be a blockbuster success, with many fans praising Cavill’s portrayal in particular. While the actor doesn’t regret much about Man of Steel, he does still have a minor gripe. When Cavill was asked by The Hollywood Reporter if he could change anything about the film, the actor responded, “I would’ve smiled differently.”

Cavill clarified his meaning, specifying that the exact moment that bothers him takes place in one of the film’s final scenes, where Superman in his secret identity of Clark Kent meets with his mother, played by Diane Lane. In his own words, the actor noted, “Every time I see it I’m like, ‘That’s an irritating smile.’ I just don’t like it. Why did I smile like that? That’s not how I smile. That I would have done it differently.”

This isn’t the first time that Cavill’s grin has been the talk of the town. The actor infamously filmed reshoots for Justice League while in the middle of making Mission Impossible: Fallout, forcing Warner Bros. to remove his mustache with CGI in post-production. The decision was universally panned, with the resulting smile coming across as incredibly unnatural. Ultimately, the film was reworked for the highly-anticipated “Snyder Cut,” and these scenes were cut out entirely, since the original director never wanted them there to begin with.

When asked about restoring Cavill’s face to its original look, Snyder explained he was “happy that we were able to have that not be the total legacy of the hard work that he had done over the last ten years, you know. It’s sad to think that would have been the last view that people had of Superman was just that, whatever that is.”

Though Zack Snyder’s Justice League was the end of an over-arching story that began in Man of Steel, Cavill isn’t quite ready to hang up the cape. The actor has been vocal about wanting to play the Last Son of Krypton again, saying, “There is still a lot of storytelling for me to do as a Superman, and I would absolutely love the opportunity.”

While fans wait for news about Cavill’s big-screen ventures, fans can turn to the pages of Action Comics to keep up with the Man of Steel. Recently, Superman was plagued by a series of attacks from Mongul, an intergalactic tyrant who runs the battlefield planet known as Warworld. These attacks have led Superman to align himself with some new allies, an antiestablishment superhero team known as the Authority. Together, Superman and the Authority are taking the fight to Mongul in “The Warworld Saga,” which just began in Action Comics #1036.
