Heels star Stephen Amell says he didn’t actively pursue his next acting project while filming the final season of Arrow.
Heels star Stephen Amell revealed in a new interview that he didn’t even think about what his next project would be while filming the eighth and final season of Arrow.
“I gotta tell you right now, as I hold up [Malcolm Gladwell’s] most recent book that I’m reading now, The Bomber Mafia, you know, I just thought that I had another gear,” Amell said on a new episode of the Hero Nation Podcast, as reported by Deadline. “And I thought that I had, I thought that I had more in the tank and more that I wanted to share with this industry and this career that I’ve chosen.”
Amell further explained he “wanted to be inspired again” by whatever came after Arrow and wasn’t motivated to sign up for a project he wasn’t incredibly passionate about.
“So [Arrow producer] Greg Berlanti, who’s way smarter than I am, you know, as evidenced by his prolific nature in film and television, convinced me…He basically put me [in] a place where it would have been fiscally irresponsible for me to not do a seventh season then complete it with a truncated eighth season,” the actor explained. “But during that eighth season…I had not made any overtures out into the world about what the next project would be, I actually hadn’t even considered it quite frankly.”
Amell also revealed that Berlanti’s support was one of the main reasons he decided to sign on for another television series as his first post-Arrow project. According to Amell, the producer was initially hesitant about the actor taking the first project he was offered. However, when Amell revealed that Heels was written by Mike Waldron and featured an “awesome” character, Berlanti told him, “Oh, well, you buried the lead there. You should definitely do this.”
In regard to how dedicated Amell truly is to Heels, the actor recently shared that he actually broke his back while performing a wrestling move during the production of Season 1 of the Starz series. “I didn’t get as far across the ring as I wanted to and I said, ‘You know, let’s just try it again,'” Amell recalled. “…So, I asked for a second take. And I thought I knocked the wind out of myself. And I did not. I fractured my… T10 and L1. Compression fracture. I broke my fucking back.”
Created by Waldron and starring Amell, Heels also features Alexander Ludwig, Alison Luff, Chris Bauer, Allen Maldonado, James Harrison, Kelli Berglund, Mary McCormack and David James Elliott. The series is set to premiere Aug. 15 on Starz.
